T-stat bolts badly rusted (98 2.5)
I was going to replace the thermostat but the bolts that hold the housing in are pretty rusted, ones way rounded off and the other almost grips but doesn’t. I ended up just putting it back together until i had more insight. Should I heat it with a blow torch? If so, how much should I heat the bolts? I’ll have to get some penetrating oil.
i thought about possibly breaking the current housing off somehow and replacing the whole housing and i comes with new temp. sensors at my local advanced for $60

I would definitely go with penetrating oil first. And let that soak for a day or 2 before attempting any other removal. Id be worried about starting an engine fire with the torch. I have had the experience of putting out an engine fire. Nottttttt funnnnn lol. Make sure you use a 6 point socket ( dont know your experience level). And sometimes ive had luck beating a slightly smaller socket like a metric or sae or vice versa on to a slightly stripped bolt to get it out. Changing the thermostat on my 98 ranger is in the plans before fall so im sure i will be right where you are soon enough. I hope this helped a little.
