Trans issues need advice 55 F100
55 F100 272 Y block with 64 mustang four speed. Changed clutch found out previous owner had installed big bronze spacer because trans input shaft was 3/4 inch too short. I need a longer input shaft or different bell housing. I'v been told car bellhousing will slove problem but I think mounting at the rear is different. Anyone know about changing thls??
Thanks for any help....

No such thing as a 1964 Mustang. Introduced April 23, 1964, Ford called 'em 1965's from the get go.
TWO different 1965 V8 bell housings, one has 5 bolt holes, the other has 6.

If the adapter piece was made properly, to tight tolerances, I'm not sure it's a problem. How did the clutch work before? Can you post a pic of the adapter? Does the flywheel have a ball bearing or bushing type pilot bearing?
Are you using the bellhousing motor mounts, or have they been replaced by a mount off the rear of the trans?

There have been (I would imagine there is still, but I'm not sure) adapter-type pilot bushings to allow for trans conversions into particular applications, such as this. 60's Ford manual transmissions came in small block and big block type, depending on the length of the pilot end of the input shaft. Big blocks were shorter than small blocks, and you could get an extra deep pilot bushing for your 289/302 to install a big block trans, if you wanted to. It sounds like this is what you have, and unless there's a problem, it should work perfectly fine, and perhaps has for many years.

It had mechanical clutch modified linkage that was a mess but worked for a long time.. trans is late 64 year for first 65 Mustangs HEH-P code. They apparently used a adapted bronze pilot bushion. Again worked but very sloppy fit, the input shaft was not being held very securely. My input shaft is about 3/4 inch short to fit the pilot bearing I got with the clutch kit. The bronze bushion I have is very large and sticks out from the flywheel enough to mate with the trans but is worn out.
Anyone know where to get one? Would rather have it correct but to do that side mounts would have to be fitted so I could use car style bellhousing and add trans mount. Not impossible but more work and time but a better engineered fitting. Not sure if y block will be kept long term but budget to change engine not practical now. Modified bushion cheapest solution now.
Again, anybody know who makes them??

You might give these guys a call, adapting different trannies to engines is their business: Pilot Bearings & Bushings | Advance Adapters

I wonder if anyone else has ever seen something like this bushion??

Well, called several who advertise bushings but no one seems to be interested in a one off except for big bucks for set up etc. and big price break if 4 or more are ordered....wow...I can remount engine with side mounts like a car application and use car bellhousing and add trans crossmember I guess. Didn't expect I needed to open a machine shop just to fix this thing...lol! Anybody---got some add'l ideas??
