Watson 2021

A buddy of mine has an overdrive he pulled from a half ton Chevy. I think it would work on my F3 project. I find very little online about it. Anybody run one? H.S. Watson Model 2021.

It seems three companies eventually became Spicer and this does say Spicer on the tag as well. It looks like it can be mounted as under or overdrive. It is cable actuated. Looks doable.

Does it have u-joint yokes on it? Or did the chevy have a torque tube? Those units usually don't have seals on the ends, so the yokes have turns that look like threads on the inside. These threads are used to force the gear lube back in side the case. Sooooo, if you turn the unit the wrong way, everyone will know where your going, plus you'll run it out of lube. In the long run, its either an overdrive or an underdrive. Unless it's a 3 speed. Then you might have both ratio's.
Then comes the other problem. If it is overdrive, how much is too much overdrive before the engine runs out of air?

I thought GM trucks went to the Hotchkiss drive configuration beginning in late '54.

It's got u-joints on both sides. The little info I found shows either .72 or .75 overdrive. Saw one reference that it was 70's or 80's Chevy trucks? Had Morse marine cable actuation. Looks like I could even rig lever if I wanted to.

It's just a small gearbox with gear lube in it. Mount it one way it's OD. Flip it around and its underdrive. Looks like it would work. I have a two piece drive line with a carrier bearing on the cross member. Put it there. Now that I'm all fired up about it my buddy is having second thoughts of getting rid of it. If I use it I will post up pics.

One thing that would be an issue is speedometer. It's not accurate with my gear swap and tire change anyway.

I have .72 OD in the Brownie I installed in my F4. I believe that Watson unit would work really good in your truck. Install it just forward of where the carrier bearing is now, with the rear yoke in the correct place to use your rear driveshaft as is. Then you might be able to install it with only modifying the front driveshaft. Maybe you could shift it with a solenoid and control it with a two speed axle switch on the stick.

You could always get a Speed Hut GPS speedometer. I have one in my '52 and it works great with a small antenna that sits on the dash (magnet). https://www.speedhut.com/gauges/

Sorry for the late reply fellas. My world is coming down on me a bit right now. I'll get back to this eventually.

Mark, thanks for the confirmation and the solenoid idea. I always like your ideas and the work you do.

topmoo, thanks for that link. I never knew of that company.
