One question. Is the date on the bucket bottom molded in to the bucket or is it a sticker? If it is "in" the bucket it could have sat empty for some time before it was ever used.

It was a code bar sticker with some numbers and the date, I do believe its 18 year old oil i mean Ive been working in that company for more than 11 years and have seen those buckets stored there since i started working there. I order the sample last night when ever I get the results back ill post them up.

I'll bet it's junk. I would use it as fuel, but not motor oil. I'll be shocked if the test comes back good. I've seen oil only a year or so old have sediment at the bottom of the bottle, the sediment is supposedly good stuff that has separated out. I always wondered if the sediment might be 'junk' in the oil. I'll bet the bottom of that bucket has a nice dark layer of stuff, give it a check.

There was a small amount of lard looking stuff at the bottom but it was almost nothing, the size of a quarter. I did take out the oil and put in in some 2.5 gallon containers as the bucket got brittle.

Yes, please let us know what they say. This is really interesting.

Dad and I discussed it, and he said he wouldn't be scared to use it.

Alright, will be waiting to here back. Being it was sealed I bet it's okay. It's up to what we had back then. I liked the old RPM 3000 oil that standard had. Didn't burn off and would stop oil burning in some cases.

My dad always said that the only things that you can do to "hurt the oil" is to burn it or let it get dirty. But that was many moons ago before all of the additive we have today. That said I doubt much of anything is going to "drop out" from just sitting in a jug.

Just to give specifics and the procedure I took when i emptied the 5gal bucket into two clean 2.5 gallon jugs. I used brake cleaner to clean any residue, and yes I waited till it dried completely. When filling the sample bottle I cleaned the funnel, again with brake cleaner and waited to dry and making sure no dirt or any particle fell in. Wifes sending the sample tomorrow.

Did the bucket have a CPI diesel oil spec on it, like CJ-4 etc?

If it was from 2010, it was CJ-4. I'd use it without issue. I can't imagine it would be a big deal.
