I ran a setup like that for about 12 years on my truck. It worked great. Details are in post #8 in this thread:

For other reasons, I later converted to a full electric setup and removed the stock mechanical pump. Details at the beginning of that same thread.

Please note, for either arrangement, you MUST include some sort of automatic shutoff. Lots of discussion in that thread.
