Race trailer with living quarters pin weight

I've been looking at race trailers with living quarters up front recently - in particular, I have my eye on a 40' ATC goose with a 19' garage and 13' LQ. 'Dry weight' is listed at 12.9k with 6.3k in available payload. I thought that pulling this with my SRW F-350 would be marginal at best, but likely under (or very close) to coming in under my allowable payload. However, I was floored when the salesman told me the pin weight is over 4k! I understand that a lot of the weight is up front, but that's over 31% on the ball. Can anyone here verify that such a number is about right for a setup like this?

Unfortunately, upgrading to such a trailer just wasn't on my radar when I bought my truck 6 months ago...would obviously go DRW in retrospect.

What are you hauling in it and how is it compared to the axles? When I load dirt bikes in the toyhauler my pin weight goes down a little. loading a 3000# car you may lose a couple hundred pounds of pin weight.

Probably 3000 lbs of stuff...2500 from a mid-engined car, and 500 of wheels/tires mounted high on the wall at the back. So you’re right, I doubt much of that, if any, would transfer to the bed of the truck. Unfortunately, I think no matter how I slice this, I need a dually

Agreed dually would be best. can you post a link or a picture of the trailer?

Will they let you go weigh it on a CAT scale before you buy it? Just to check the actual pin weight is correct?

Well...I'm in Maryland, and one trailer is in OK with the other in IN. I guess the pin weight makes sense - I was just using the standard 20-25% and I obviously should have been using a higher percentage due to all the weight being right up front. Shopping for dually's now

Just remembered that I started this thread, and want to post an update. I went with a 40’ Sundowner - 18’ garage and 22’ LQ. The garage could stand to be a couple of feet longer, but it works. The dryweight is just under 10k, with a pin weight of 2500lbs. My SRW 350 did OK on a hilly trip up to Watkins Glen, but I was bouncing off the bump stops with light steering and the headlights pointed toward the sky. So...I traded it in on an ‘18 450. Took one relatively short but very hill trip so far, and it’s awesome. The garage was empty but the water tank was full, so the trailer was very unbalanced but it wasn’t an issue at all. The $$$ hit stings a bit, but the truck is so awesome that I’ve almost forgotten about that!

Dealer came to me for the trade - new and old in the parking garage at work


New 450 ready for a 4th of July camping trip!

Yes, raced there last September and will again this year. It's relatively close to me at only 2.5 hours away. Fun course!

I live on the Blue Ridge Mountain just a few miles east of Summit Point right on the WV/VA state line. I am there simi regularly. You run with PCA?

Cool. I figured you probably did. I have done some instructing with PCA over the years. SP is far from my favorite track but its OK.
