Bearing Buddy Stuck on Hub- Help Please!

Hey guys. I’m going on a 650 mile trip and bringing one of my trailers. This trailer is a tandem axle 16 foot utility trailer. It was used when I bought it 2 years ago and I never serviced it mainly because it has just been sitting. Well now I’m going to use it so I went out earlier to re pack the wheel bearings since I don’t know when, if ever, was the last time that was done. All 4 bearing buddies are stuck on. Tried tapping with a mallet- which turned into banging with a mallet lol. Took a pick and scored the surface where the mate to the hub. Tried penetrating oil. Tried putting a 50mm socket over it and wiggling/walking it off. Tried heating the hub with a heat gun. Nothing.

Any advice? I’m leaving tomorrow. I could take the 24 footer if I had to but rather take this 16 since it’s smaller.

Thanks.

When mine stick I used a small cold chisel and just tap it gently where the cap meets the hub. Sort of work my way around. My penetrating oil of choice is Blaster.

I use Blaster too. I will try the chisel. If I had spare hubs I would just beat the snot out of it but I’m trying to not ruin anything.

Worst case, you need new caps. If you screw up the hubs you're doing something wrong. I am not a fan of bearing buddies. A good ol' fashioned repacking the bearings at least once a year is the best thing you can do.

I know it doesn't help you, but I'm not a fan of Bearing Buddy's either. Since you're this far, may as well try to get them off with a cold chisel, and worse case, take the 24' this trip, until you can sort out the hubs on the 16'. Once you get them apart, build them back without those Bearing Buddy's, and life will be simpler next time.

Thanks for the advice guys. I’m not a fan of them either- my 24’ which I bought new just has dust covers because I re pack those bearings each year. I think if you’re maintaining them regularly then the buddies are not necessary. I didn’t end up getting them off the 16’ so I have the 24’ on the back of the truck right now. When I get home I’m going to beat those buddies with a mini sledge.

It seems a bit ironic to me that a device that is supposed to lubricate is now stuck on.

Good luck getting it fixed. I had no idea what Bearing Buddies were and had to look it up. I've learned something today. Can I go home now?

I've used Bearing Buddies on every boat trailer I've owned, they really are designed to keep water out of the bearings. I don't think they are designed to keep a bearing packed. This is just my opinion.

New bearing buddies are not all that cheap either- I mean you wouldn't have to give up your first born or morgage your house- but for something that just sits there- they are pricey .
