First Drive: 2018 Ford F-150 with the New Power Stroke Diesel

Patrick just spent some time with the new diesel, and had a chance to see how it performed on the road, in the dirt, and towing a trailer. Check out his through review here!

Here's hoping they'll expand the diesel to the regular market after a year or so. I'm not going to drop $60k on a luxury truck. I'll take an XLT with the diesel, but I'm not a contractor or business owner, so I guess I may never get one. I'm not a fan of the Ram Ecodiesel either...dealership oil change on that sucks is $230 (10.5qts of 5w40 T6) in a less than capable truck.

I would like to see a side by side comparison of the 3.5 EB and the new diesel, including dyno numbers. I haven’t seen any numbers for the diesel other than max hp/tq and I’m curious to see how the torque band compares to the EB.

A 6k pound two horse trailer is no test that comes close to justifying a diesel.
How about a 9.8k pound utility trailer and tractor with implements?
Come back and tell us how that works because that's where most 1/2 tons get weak, even my Tundra.
Six thousand pounds please.....

That is not what it was designed for. They are going after people who tow lighter or moderate loads. If you are dragging a 10k lb trailer on a regular basis, you need to be in a 3/4 or 1 ton.

Agree.....but I drag one around on a monthly basis to shred pastures.
Unlike a regular basis of say a TT with weekend camping in far away places. Many times a month/year.
A 6k load is easily handled by the other three engines available.
Which is why the Eco-Diesel has low towing numbers as well.

Having said all that, it looks like the oil burners in the half ton are blurring lines.
The cost benefit ratio of higher up front cost etc.

Hey, I'm still in denial........I want the fuel economy of this new PSD in the half ton...so guess I'm looking for that unicorn truck ....cause deep down inside I know a 3/4 is what I need....

yep. some guy mentioned rams lower capacity and its true, by design. they could of matched or exceeded the f150 capacity but they felt if your towing around that much weight you should be in a larger truck

I have always felt that this is why the Ecodiesel and the Titan XD haven't set the world on fire with their sales numbers. When it comes down to it, the 1/2 ton diesel really only appeals to a small segment since the gas versions already have the capability of towing and hauling everything and more than the chassis can handle. It really comes down to wanting that diesel fuel economy and feel, which many are simply not willing to opt for in the 1/2 ton segment.

Who knows, maybe the new F150 diesel will change that. But I don't expect it to be exceeding the gas powerplants in sales anytime soon.

I got $10k off for my 2016 when it was new, also got $10k off for my 2012 when it was new.. I don't see Ford offering $10k off for the diesels and I'd be spending $15k more on options I don't need. With the higher maintenance costs, I'd have to drive over 300,000 miles to recoup my losses. Pass.

I haven't seen much mention of this new offering on Ford's website yet. When will it be available for order?

It has been available to order since some time in February. They are expecting trucks on the dealer lots by the end of the month.
