1954 F-100 door locks

I need help getting the door locks installed... is there a secret method to this? I push the lock into the hole then push as hard as possible on the retainer clip to get it 3/4 in the hole before the clip starts to bend.

Is the clip supposed to go all the way in and mount flush with the door?

The clip should slip right in and the tab should seat flush under the weatherstrip rubber. That said, the clip and the slot in the door lock housing is designed to mount into a door skin of a given thickness...the thickness that it came out of the factory with. If there has been bodywork done on the door in the area of the door lock hole then the door skin may now be too thick. If that is not the case then I would double check the clip and door lock slot alignment.
