I am at 200k on the original starter. Bought a 6.4L starter a year ago (planning ahead, figured my time was soon to come for needing one). I just can't bring myself to remove a working part - especially after seeing how many people have below average longevity on them!

Call me old fashioned, but I always look for used starters on places like car-part.com where the mileage is often listed of the chassis the part is coming from, or a local yard and craigslist.
I think over the years I've bought one starter that was new in the box, otherwise it's been used.
My premise is that if I find a starter with around 100k miles on it it's likely to last me around another 50k or so.

I’m with Mike. Lately my need of a starter, alternator or some other complex electrical component has me hunting eBay salvage dealers, looking for low mileage, but OE components. If it looks aftermarket I pass.

My OE starter made it about 160-170k, and probably a lot of workout when the reman motor was installed at the dealer in the 135k range. Ford reman starter, a 6.4 variant, no issues for 50k.

With some many rebuilding electrical components coming from WEI China, or containers of starters and alternators being shipped for free back to China for rebuilding at the lowest price, my confidence in rebuilt parts isn’t there. But that’s just me.

I use the mean green and love them, the 2 year warranty is no joke, if there is a problem they take it back and you get a new one. Period!!!

In general, with the 6.0L you're FAR more likley to have to get towed home due to an FICM failure, injector problem or ICP problem etc than a starter failure.....

Not sure I have ever had an Autozone starter fail on me

I did replace the alternator about 3 times on my 1994 Surburban K2500 in the 20 years I owned it (from new) ....The first one was an OEM (that failed after warranty was up) the next 2 were autozone alternators. (free replacement of course!)

I think I would take the risk on a starter. They don't usually fail completely. You usually do get *some * warning. I would just get another one at the first indication of a problem......

So yeah......it would be "worth it" to me

Finally got the new Mahle starter installed. Piece of cake, the hidden bolt was easy. The bad starter was actually a new unit but the teeth on the gear where failing.

The new 3.2KW unit actually has the 6.0 gear with the nose on it, so I'm a bit concerned about its RPM performance. I didn't get a chance to evaluate it cause I had to rush off to visit a family member at the hospital. My truck always started in less than 2 seconds so Im hoping for similar results.

Here's a picture of the bad teeth:

TYC 1-06675 less than a year old from Rockauto

Here's a video testing the new unit.

Looks like the teeth skipped the harding and tempering process and went out soft and raw..
