Looking for some constructive input on these trucks for a slide in camper with the ability to tow. I sold my '16 F250 CCSB 6.7L 4x4 and toy hauler and would like to move to a truck camper package that I can tow my 7x16 tandem flat trailer with either my SXS at 1200lbs or bracket car at 2500lbs. I really like the AF 992 and I'm guessing wet it's going to come in at close to 5Klbs. I'd also like to just get a flatbed for a bit of external storage, not a great deal of weight but some bulky camping items.
So some options I have found are
A: '17 F550 CC 6.7l 4x4 with a monroe hauler flatbed. I'm sure it's plenty of truck but it's also pretty pricey and has 19.5s with 4.30 gear.
B: '17 F350 4x4 6.7l CC with a CM aluminum flatbed, price is better same trim package as A but probably going to run close to max GCVW, 17"wheel with 4.10s.
C: '15 F350 4x4 6.7l CC DRW regular bed, used so price is the best. I think it has a dana 80 with 3.73, I'd have to change the bed down the road or transfer stuff onto the trailer which wouldn't be a big deal.

A/B I feel are over geared, with the heavier load it'll be pretty flat highway travel. With the SXS into the hills 6-7% grade. The 16' pulled them in 4th at about 18.5Klbs in the heat with 3.55s, 5th gear when it was cooler out.
Insurance seems to be an issue on the 4/5 series, state farm seems to go by GVW but I think it's doable without commercial policy. AZ will screw all these on registration due to weight.

I think all 3 will do the job, all have plenty of power for me and cheapest usually wins but are the other two worth the extra $?

I like my truck (in sig.) and just put a 2015 Host Mammoth camper on it today, actually. I have a 6,114 pound payload and am running the 6.2L gas engine. I'll eventually haul a utility trailer behind it with a couple of 4-wheelers. Even w/o a trailer, I found I do want airbags because of how tall the TC is and how that moves the CoG up out of the bed. YMMV.

Have you looked at the f450 pickup?

 

Hey the AF looks good for a flatbed, like all of them it's how far forward it'll go until stuff gets in the way. The 990 i looked at has two diagonal braces for the bumper, may be easy enough to modify the bed to slide it up on a 9' bed.

The 450 conundrum, with a factory bed the CCC is less than a DRW 350. They are still a 14K truck unless I do cab and chassis and up it to 16K. The 17s+ have larger rear axle, wide front axle, larger brakes and those cool 19.5s . The 4/5 series trucks I'm having a lot issues with insurance, when they want to do a personal policy it's $2600/yr compared to ~900.

I'm thinking the 15s are the way to go, can't see I enough benefit to the larger truck for this package.

Just wondering. If that's based on dealing with "normal" insurance companies - State Farm, Geico, Allstate, etc. - have you checked with one of the specialty companies that provide RV insurance, such as Good Sam or Foremost?

 

We have our F-450 Super Duty insured with State Farm in New York State. No problem...not commercial. If it was a F-450 chassis/cab I think insurance would of been an issue.
