First fluids change - still use 5W-40 in AZ desert?
I read the new to me thread, and it recommends 5W-40 synthetic and the motorcraft filter and housing. I bought the parts, but I am not sure about the oil...
Motorcraft 5W-40 synthetic even in the Arizona heat? It gets hotter than the devil's nuts here, and the coldest I've ever seen is still only 25degrees. Nowhere close to zero, ever.
The dealer recommended the motorcraft 15W-40 synthetic diesel motor oil - they said they use that on all oil changes with the powerstroke.

Howdy,
ALL synthetic motor oils are literally a straight weight oil in that at 100 degrees C, a 0W-40, 5W-40, 10W-40, 15W-40 etc are 40wt oils (as are 0W-30, 5W-30, 10W-30 etc "30W" oils) they just don't thicken like NON-syn when cold.
. So at operating temps, it simply doesn't matter.
However, If any of the previous grades are non-synthetic, then after the oils are well used, they may not remain 40wt (or 30wt resp) at 100deg C because non-synthetics use vi improvers which make the oil thicker at high temps.
(I.E. NON-synthetic 15W-40 oil is actually a 15W oil. VI improvers are used to increase viscosity @ 100C to 40w and so on...... ) So, as the oil "wears out" the grade begins to drop (thin out)
Nothing wrong with using any good brand 15W-40 (including Motorcraft) in your truck (as long as you use the correct SAE API designated grade)
On this site and other forum sites, you'll get a LOT of "here's what I use and I've never had a problem" suggestions. Most of us like a good synthetic 5W-40.
In any HEUI engine, there may be less chance of injector stiction with thinner oil during a cold startup.
But once all warmed up, ALL the synthetics are 40wt (xxW-40 etc) or 30wt (xxW-30)
Cheers,
Rick

It gets pretty warm here in Texas too. I run delo 5-40 synthetic with good results as many do. There’s a very interesting thread about 15-40 delo. It’s your choice in the end. Look for the post “CK-4 oil in my 6.0”. And you should also do your oil analysis to see how things are working for you. Seems like some engines prefer one brand/weight over another.

The WSS-M2C171-F1 list reads like an inventory of the shelf at every autoparts store in the country. Rotella T4-T5-T6 are all on it, Royal Purple, Valvoline.
The most conspicuously absent oils I noticed are Mobil 1 TDT, Devlac ESP and any Chevron product. But the kicker is the whole standard only expands on valve train wear in the 6.7L, in general CK-4 is fully backwards compatible to CJ-4, International hasn't released a statement on their engines (aka our engine) that I've seen, so I'm not worried in the slightest.
I have a big stock of Delo 400 LE CJ-4, but once that's gone I'm probably going to go back to T6 in the new CK-4 formula. Truck has been happy with each.

Wow, this is pretty hard on me, because I can pickup a 5 gallon bucket of Delo CK-4/SN 15W-40 hd diesel oil for 89.00 at O'reillys. Today. literally 10 minutes away. And all I've heard about it is good stuff. Until this.
Tractor supply sells the Rotella T5 for $20 a gallon. And if I follow that approved list, that's what I should be getting right?
Not that I have any warranty whatsoever.

Screw it, I am going to use the Delo CK-4/SN.
Tractor supply has it for 69.99 for a 5 gallon bucket.
Besides, this ain't no Ford 6.7L, I'm driving an international engine, just like my Daddy did

A little late but maybe others would be interested in it. Saves a few bucks vs regular Wal-Mart price

I swear life is like a game where they keep making up new rules. I never know what I am going to be hit with next!
So I take it the 5w-40 t6 is better in our part of the desert?

That's what i use in mine or the delo 5w40. The injectors benefit from it more vs the engine itself. Depending on the health of the injectors you might be able to tell right away with an oil change that it was due to be changed. Your injectors should be good but they did do some sitting along with the turbo. So, they might have some stiction and turbo have stuck vanes. I'll be off this weekend if you want to call and we can meet up
