‘05 F150 Lariat 5.4L Triton

Just got a 2005 5.4L triton at 125k miles. Looking for pros and cons. What to watch out for and what to look forward to. As well as good stories as well. I basically just want to get to know the truck and more specifically the engine a little better.

any tips on any ways to increase mpg would also be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

spark plugs are to be changed at 100K miles....... verify if that was done.

make sure you keep the oil FULL and CLEAN..motor has variable cam timing (VCT) and the phasers and solenoids can cause problems when worn.......... listen for cam chain noises.

no good way to increase mileage.... most things are snake oil.

I'd definately have the transmission fluid changed.....and the filter, if it has one....

Mine went out around 170k....and didn't service it enough...$2,000 lesson.

Might have went out anyway due to stamped steel parts in it instead of forged.

Might as well go thru some kind of radiator flush also as you have no idea what the previous owner put in it.....could save you big also in case it overheats.

I have the 2004 version. 5.4. Lifetime average MPG of 13.53. Started towing a 6500 LB. camper last summer. That drops the average! Only way to improve gas mileage on a 5000 lb. vehicle is to leave it parked. Towing I am at 8 or 9 MPG. Other than that, owned it around 7 years. Had some of the usual problems. Cam phasers replaced at 74000 miles, six years ago. Still running strong. Had some stuff fixed on the four wheel drive, vacuum switching system is crap. New rotors. New spark plugs. Other than that normal wear and tear. 123000 miles currently.

Congratulations. I would change all fluids so you have a baseline.
