Alex, You have a couple of options on the stick. You can weld up the slot and recut it to 5/16" and ream the hole in the transmission top for the pin to 5/16" and use a dowel pin. You can cut a new slot on the other side of the ball and drill and ream a pin hole on the other side of the top. Whatever you do, the pin needs to be a hardened pin. Dowel pins work good, but you may have to grind one to the correct length.

Can I just measure the slot and find a pin that matches that dimension?

Alex, The slot will have to be milled straight to remove the wear at the top from the pin. If it will clean up at 3/8" wide, that is probably as large as you could safely ream the pin hole in the top. I am sending you a PM about the bearing retainer/ transmission mount.

I'll check that out. No reproduction sticks anywhere huh? Or spares anyone might have?

Alex, if you have access to a 5/16" reamer to ream the pin hole in your transmission top, I can mill the slot in the stick that I have and shorten a 5/16" dowel for you. If you don't have access to a reamer, I can ream the top I have also.

If I did it myself it would have to be in a handheld drill, no machine tools in my garage. Would that work?

Would definitely take that stick though...

A variable speed drill that you could run slow would work. I would use a countersink first and countersink the hole so that the OD of the countersink you cut is just over 5/16". I would then drill the hole with a 9/32" bit and then ream with the 5/16" reamer. The reason for the countersink is to keep the drill and reamer form hanging up on the threads when you try to use them.

So as we go into the weekend I think an update is in order..

50 Days Remaining:
Got the oil pan back on last night. Couldn't find the bolts for 3 hours.
Mark is selling me a few of the trans parts I need luckily, thanks!

Goal for this weekend is to get the new clutch in, trans bolted up, and drop in the whole assembly. Probably also begin working on some body work.

Moving forward= progress
those nuts and bolts sometimes hide themselves right under my nose!
Did Mark have a spare shift stick for your trans?
if not I'm sure I've got one from a crashbox around here somewhere.

Right under my nose..in an unlabeled styrofoam cup on the top shelf...

He sure did. Mark hooked me up with a great bundle of parts.

One step forward, One step back:

My 4000lb tow strap failed when hoisting the motor off the stand into the frame, dropped the motor backwards onto the starter shaft. Now my starter motor shaft is bent so severely it won't even rotate by hand.

So.

Can I replace the shaft? Or do I replace the whole starter?

If there’s no further damage inside the stater you can take it apart and just replace the armature. The shaft is an integral part of the armature and can be replaced alone.

Thanks for the advice. I'll take the starter apart and see what we have.

Spent the day wire wheeling the front axle and leaf springs clean, degreasing, and painting. New main leaves will arrive Tuesday.

I'll be out of town for a week which sets me back but it's an important trip.
