Oil change questions
ok today I am changing my oil for the first time. I have a motorcraft fl-2016 filter for my 2008 6.4 and it has four prongs on the top that look like they clip into something. The filter I pulled out looks different, it doesn't have those four prongs and it's a little taller. The oil was last changed by the dealership I bought it from. Anybody run into this or maybe can shed some light on this? Is it some kind of after market cap or do I have the wrong filter. The 2016 snaps into place in the cap but not by those four prongs, instead, around the edge of the filte. Is this right? Also I see no place in the housing for the bottom of the filter to seal against, is this right?...........I just want to make sure I get this right,........Thanks

Ok,.......just for everybody that might run into this in the future,.......after looking through the rockauto website I see that my cap is indeed an aftermarket cap that is sold with a CHEAP filter in a "cap already installed" type situation with "do not reuse" stamped on the cap.So I ordered a motorcraft cap, but what really pisses me off is when the dealer changed the oil before I saw it and bought it they must have just drained the oil and put new in and not replaced the filter.....REALLY???? Who does this? UGH!

What will really **** you off is, if the dealer installed an OEM filter into a cap that is taller, then the filter was essentially bypassed for the entire duration between then and you changing it now.
bypassed in two ways;
1 - the OEM filter never sealed on the ends so oil easily bypassed
2 - the drain valve in the bottom of the bowl was never closed, therefore you had oil presure bleeding into the crankcase that should have been used to pressurize the bearings

I hear you both on this. A Ford dealer in Texas was installing Napa filters (with the throw-away cap) during my oil changes. I finally found out when I bought a Motorcraft filter and took it to a quick-lube. They had to sell me the Ford cap for the MC filter. Never had the dealer do an oil change again. I figure they could make more money on the Napa filters. It just amazes me that a dealer would risk putting those in. They would definitely need to sneak around warranty claims.
