Ford 223 Timing/idle

Good Afternoon guys,

I have a 1963 F100 with a straight 6 and I can't seem to get it running right. I have aligned the rotor with the #1 plug wire on the distributor. I've set 4 degrees BTDC, and it would initially fire up, but high revs around 1200-2000 rpm. When I try to get it to 700 rpm idle range it dies. It sounds really rough and the engine is shaking. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm not up on my sixes but it is very common for Fords in general to have defective crankshaft vibration absorbers after all these tears, where the timing marks live. Then there's the whole load-o-matic distributor deal, it must be used with the proper carburetor, otherwise it will idle fine but run poorly.

Thanks, I’m going to change gaskets and check everything again. The truck has a uremco carb from summit, however it recently started leaking gas out from it. So another issue I need to deal with.

I'm no expert on this platform by any means, just guessing based on the high idle symptom. Be interested to hear what you find.

So after doing some light reading, it turns out it’s my distributor/carb combo. Since the carb was swapped, it eliminated the spark control valve which apparently is very important for the load o matic to run properly. I have the old carb still but it was broken and rigged. I’ll send it out for repair, reinstall and keep you posted. https://fordsix.com/ci/Loadomatic.html

or atleast this is the one item I can eliminate.
