2002 7.3 new (to me truck)

hello I am about to buy my dads 2002 7.3. It only has 106k on it. 90% of the miles are not towing anything the other 10% towed a 5th wheel and an enclosed trailer behind it in tandem totaling around 12k pounds. My question is what should I get checked out as this will be a new truck to me and I want it to last a very long time. Has had the usual ballot on stuff replaced already (alternator, batteries, maybe glow plugs and relay but can’t remember about that one.) this is my first diesel selling off my 2010 tundra to buy this. Thx everyone.

Congrats man! Inspect the middle of motor for fluid..aka, the valley. If you v want to get dirty and its all for preventative maintenance, check out guzzle 7.3 site. I'd pay attention to thr hutch mod, fuel bowl rebuild and i think, the 50 cent mod he may have on the site also. Change out all fluids so you have a starting point for logging....other than that, enjoy bud. Others will have ideas

Pics or it doesn't exist

I'll second Timmyboy. Guzzle's site has just about everything you will ever encounter and will equip you with the knowledge to be a fine shade tree mechanic for that 'ole 7.3L.

Also, check out Tugly's Torque Pro PID posts how to monitor just about everything in a $5 android app.

Welcome to FTE
I'll third Timmyboy and second CousinCarl.
Torque Pro is a great app for monitoring things on the truck. It won't monitor EGT or FP, so if you don't have those gauges already, It will be worth it to add them.

There are a lot of knowledgeable people here, (not me), but I am learning a lot as I go along and I think you will too.

Being it was Dads, it's probably a great truck. Say dad, how about changing the oil and fuilds for me. If he services it himself, you can learn a lot from him. That's a great start. Now when you do this, make sure you use diesel type oil only. Different from gas motors. Our you going to be towing? These are great trucks but do require more maintenance.

2002-2003 are great years, they are noticeably more refined than the earlier ones or at least all the ones I looked at before finding my 2002. It's the best truck I've ever owned and like coax I plan to keep it forever.

Sounds like it is barely broken in.

Maintenance. Maintenance. Maintenance.

See the link in my signature for grins, I'm in a little over $3,000 on my "free" truck, and figure I'm about half way through it. I'm pushing 300,000 miles (rounding up a wee bit LOL) and hope for another 100.000. Jump ahead a few pages as the first part of the thread is boring. I'm sure your truck looks nicer than mine! So post some pics already!

And welcome to FTE!

No better person to get a truck from but a good relative. My brother had my truck for 7 years and I was looking for a truck and couldn’t find one. So we were for replacement of a derogatory word very intoxicated. So I started talking about it and I told him “hey how bout this, you want to buy a utility truck and I want to buy a 7.3 which you have so sell me your and you can use the cash to get that utility”... so we hashed out the deal at the bar and I’ve had it for a couple years and I didn’t buy it from a stranger...get ready for some expensive up keep though

The late 7.3 trucks are nice, I really miss mine. they do have one downfall and its the PMR rods.

Hutch mod was the most noticeable thing I have done - immediately ran quieter. I also have better confidence about what's going on inside the fuel tank. I would do this after you have changed fluids and done all the usual PM tasks.

Um, not expensive at all unless you get into major mods and changing stuff out. C'mon dude, a little more reality please. Maybe "Strokin her" is what's costing you money.

OP, these need regular maintenance....oil changes, fuel filters, O-Rings, etc....unless it has been beat on, which it doesn't sound like it has, it should be fairly straight forward. Keep the oil change intervals at less than 5k intervals because our injectors are driven off of and require good, clean oil. make sure you stay on top of the fuel filter for the same reason. Read through the stuff previously suggested and you'll know more than most on this forum, including those stating how "expensive" these are to upkeep. Not true at all.

I saw that, when posting with a mobile device signatures don't display. Check his other posts he probably has some with the signature on them.
