Just to refresh, the Allison 1000 is engineered for 1000 ft-lb torque. The real beast is in the medium duty trucks which is a 3000 ft-lb design.

The 6R140 is rated to 1400 ft-lb torque. The predecessor 5R110 is rated to 1100 ft-lb and is easily equal or better than the Allison 1000. It is actually a 6 speed which uses a different shift strategy cold or warm which is why it only shows one overdrive gear.

the temperature issue is verified on this forum mpby a former transmission engineer, the higher heat is designed in and that's why only using the recommended fluid. Further this is also a reason why the transmission works well, is the fluid can take the heat and can carry it away to the cooler as designed.

i will never drain my transmission myself, the best way to change these is a hot flush with a heated fluid machine so all the fluid is replaced. The only way to do this is the hot flush. Draining the pan only would require several drain and fills. Leaving a fair bit of old fluid in the cooler, lines, filter, torque converter and valve body.

my last transmission got one flush at 150k and was doing well at 250k, not a single issue. Changing fluid in advance is really not necessary, might give you peace of mind, but it's like changing the oil at 2000 miles well the oil life monitor says it's good for another 8000.

h20, where is your drain plug located? I saw 2 plugs for fill and drain but that was on the transfer case. Same thing?

Do you change your motor oil ever 3K miles, too?

Thank you all for replying. I just don't understand how a service item like this on a vehicle they designed to be used hard and taken care of does not have easy service points. To pinch pennies on an $81,000 truck is the mindset, I guess, how they didn't need help ten years ago from the gov't. They must like their techs/mechanics getting covered in fluids. I just saw the video of the tech changing the under truck fuel filter and how it rushed out all on his face. OK rant over. This is a beautiful truck that I have been getting used to but I am still uncomfortable with coming from 10 years of duramax.

As others have stated, I don't think you're going to get all the fluid out by dropping the pan. There probably is a temperature controlled valve that if the trans isn't up to temp won't open and as such won't drain all the fluid. I don't like going to the dealer myself but for a complete drain and refill it's not going to be easy at home.

You've got to stop thinking "$81,000" truck when a base F-350 with the same exact transmission costs $34,155. I prefer a drain plug as well, but it also makes sense if Ford specifies a 150k fluid and filter change interval, its not something going to be used often, so why have it? If you make a mess once every 150k, is that such a big deal? And whirledpeaz is correct...this trans has a thermostat and remote cooler...dumping the pan does not get the bulk of the fluid out. Older designs envisioned more frequent changes to prolong life. Newer designs focus on saving the planet and having to change fluids less in order to reduce waste oil. Frankly, be grateful the truck has a transmission dip stick. The F-150 does not. Many European cars...even ones costing well above $81k...do not have a dipstick OR drain plug. The transmission manufacturer claims the trans is "sealed for life" with no service needed.
