6.4 hard to start after changing fuel filters

I have a problem and I hope you can help!
I have an 08 Ford F-250 SD with the 6.4 turbo diesel. I changed both fuel filters and I can not keep it running after I cycle the fuel pump 4 to 5 times. After doing this 2 to 3 times it will stay running. I am at a loss on what to do! I am retired and money is tight, that’s why I changed the filters myself. This is something that you may want to doing a show about.

Moved to the 6.4 forum.

You are getting air! First, what type of fuel filters did you use? If they are not OEM, that is a problem.

Secondly, did you take the lower one back out and ensure it is inserted correctly? Did you check both filters to ensure the the caps were completely screwed into place?

The lower filter requires that it is seated all the way, tighten and tighten until it stops turning - you can feel it stop, don’t tighten beyond stop.

I do one filter at a time and then cycle key-on for 30 seconds four times before doing the same with the second filter. Works every time.

I change my fuel filters every 10k and keep the socket/ratchet and new set of filters behind the seat Incase I find bad fuel out on the road.

Thanks for your help on my filters

I went to my Ford dealer and bought Motorcraft filters installed them cycled the fuel pump 10 times and it started!!!
I thought I was saving money by buying what were supposed to be same as OEM filters. The parts man at for told me that Ford has a patent on the filters and if somebody else makes them and claims that they are is wrong! He said that they have to be 25% different and that is why mine did not work.
Life lesson learned - used what you are suppose to and let that be that!
Thanks again

Always use OEM oil and fuel filters on these trucks.

The Ford filters are made by racor.....top of the line. Always use one fuel and oil filters on a 6.4.

did you put on a aftermarket cap....if so get the oem...especiallly for the oil filter

I have a billet aluminum oil cap from Sinister Diesel that fits very nicely, and I haven’t had any issues with it. It was part of the oil bypass system.

Since you have an oil by pass system, you are probably ok. The issue with aftermarket oil caps is oil starvation.
The caps won't depress the spring inside enough to allow the oil flow.
