ZF5 advice needed

My dads 95 F350 PSD 4x4 is having trans problems. Sometimes when shifting, it feels like it goes into gear ok, but when you let out on the clutch it grinds like its not in all the way. He kept driving it and it got worse, to the point where when it goes in gear sometimes it slips out and grinds. It has done it to me in all gears except first, I believe. I pulled the trans and partially disassembled it to inspect, and I do see wear on two of the shift forks. All the bearings look ok and I see no other problems.
I was expecting to see something more obvious because it made some banging noises while driving also, but now I am thinking it was slipping out of gear and then back in. I am thinking about replacing the sychros and shift forks but want some opinions on wether or not there is something else I should look at closer.
Thanks guys!

Symptoms Sound like bearings or Synchro’s to me...... and If your syncros look good, and the gear teeth look good (which is unlikely if he kept driving it a while in this condition), then prob bearings or a combination of bearings and worn gears....but call Midwest Transmisson and tell them your story....they should be able to tell you what to look for. If you/he have been driving it around attempting to hold it in gear with force (not saying you did). not surprising shift forks a are worn.

Banging could be a few things. Jumping teeth on gear for example. In order to do this, either gear teeth are missing or extremely worn allowing jump, or bearings are giving up allowing enough shaft movement to jump teeth, or combination of the two.

my two cents, my opinion, worth what ya paid me for it ...but honestly....if it's banging, it's likely more than the synchro's and forks imo .... something is moving too far out or worn to far.

Never tried holding it in gear, as soon as he let out on the clutch pushed it rigght back in, so only a half second of grinding. The synchros look ok to me, but I really dont knownhow to tell for sure.

I felt no play in the input or output shafts. I didnt check end play. No signs of bearing fragments on the magnet..

Did you use a dial indicator?

The spec calls for pre-load on the bearings, so you should measure zero end-play when assembled.
