Dropped tank and found this inside - any idea?
Found this in my tank when I dropped it today, any ideas? Its about 2 feet long, is some sort of stiff plastic hose. Obviously not part of sending unit and doesn't appear to be vent valve related, so I'm kind of lost.
Aside from finding that, the tank was actually shocking clean for how long it will sit without being driven with our ethanol fuels around here. Trying to decide now whether I should just replace the sending unit as a whole or just buy a new sock for it since I haven't really had any issues to speak of with it. Thoughts? How often do people have issues with the float or pickup? I have to replace the filler hoses, vent valve/grommet, and electrical connector. Tank and straps look good enough, just going to throw them back in as is, except adding new rubber under the straps.

Perhaps that's all they had on hand, and hoped for the best. Apparently, though, they were sadly disappointed! Maybe... if the tank was chocker-block full, they had a small chance of getting something out of it. I suspect they attempted it, lost the hose, and cried out, "Oh Sh$%! That did NOT work out like we thought it would!"

I'm a moron. I didn't notice that the post said it was two feet long...
I guess when you're having to be out siphoning/stealing other people's gas, that you don't get to be very choosy when it comes to a siphoning implement.
Maybe the fluid level was low enough to cause them to drop the hose. Or the cops were coming so they shoved the hose all the way in so as to hide the evidence.

Seems like it would have to be really full for siphoning, but most thief’s are idiots. My o-ring is still in place and it’s much too long for that, even if it was meant to be a crude one.
Turns out the tank has been replaced at some point in the past as once I cleaned it off I can see the spectra name brand. Guess that’s why the inside wasn’t that bad. Gonna paint it, replace the rubber on the straps and rubber hoses and put it back in. Waiting on the parts now, got a new sender too.
