Hitching up or un-hitching a 5th wheel on uneven driveway

Our family is considering upgrading to a 5th wheel from our current travel trailer. How critical is it on 5th wheels to have the truck level for hooking up or un-hitching. The parking spot for the camper is very flat but currently the truck sits nose down because the driveway goes downhill from the camper parking spot.

Will this be an issue? I only have the "universal rails" that came with my truck and have not committed to anything 5th wheel or hitch wise at this point so if there are options please share. If this isn't an issue I'll continue looking into it more. What I see so far on this site and others is the Anderson hitch seems to be well liked but if it doesn't do good in this situation which hitch would?

We just bought our fifth wheel and Anderson ultimate hitch. Haven't even picked the trailer up from the dealer yet but when I was doing research on the Anderson everything I read said the Anderson was way better on uneven terrain than a standard fifth wheel hitch. Good luck

My trailer sits flat, but I'm have a pretty good slope getting to it. Once the trailer is level my pin box is shoulder height and I'm 5'11". My Reese Elite has zero issues coupling at that angle. Not here to start a war, but I just don't understand the Andersen hype. It's light, it's cheap, I get that. But I have no interest in having the lightest, cheapest thing on the market connect my truck and trailer. Sorry. We've seen one collapse, and that's enough for me. My Reese Elite gets tucked up under my tonneau cover and hasn't left my truck bed in over a year, so weight is a non issue.

Thanks for all the feedback.

Nice to know that Anderson isn't the only choice for functional hitching on an uneven parking spot.

The one that collapsed was the aluminum model. And the RV was one that Andersen suggested NOT to use it on. I have the steel version and it works VERY well on uneven ground and I can hitch/unhitch at all angles too.

Yes, it was a roto-flex pin box. And yes it was locked out as Andersen requires it to be. Hitch still folded. Just pointing out facts. Aluminum or steel the 1 point mount Andersen is a design failure. Rail mount would be stronger.

Either way this discussion wasn't about that, and I can say my Reese Elite works fine on angles.

What you describe is a non-issue. A simple forward break-over in the driveway is not going to be a problem with any typical 5th wheel hitch.

It’s the grade side to side that has a potential for issues. However, nose up or down doesn’t cause any trouble.

Mark me down as a “no” for Anderson hitches.

I have a simialr situation, and have been looking at both the Andersen, and Curt/Reese.. I'm a skeptic when it comes to new designs. A concern I have with the Andersen, is when the ball adapter is slightly offset from hitch, and the 'plastic' guide attempts to align both.. Seems the convention 5th wheel design would be more robust..

Because it swiveles the head all kind of ways I’m good at any angle just need to get real close and adjust the head before hitching up , be careful the head is turned the same angle the hitch is. I thought all hitches did this guess I was wrong but happy with this unit and pretty heavy duty for our use it’s perfect even has a slide

I use the B&W Companion hitch been boondocking 2 yrs years now with the ground being unlevel front/ back or side/ side and even both at times never had a problem unhitching or hitching back up. Had to come at the pin at times from side angels not straight on and still no issues.

Many more votes for the B&W. Best all around hitch we have had. Solid, no chuckin and bangin and hooks/unhooks flawlessly!
