Here is a very recent thread on the subject. Several different approaches to getting the job done.

I had two friends help me install my cab. But my cab is not pretty. I had to import one friend from St. Louis, about 2 hours away.
We need to have a retirement community we can all live in. Not many people understand our disorder. Shoot, I have people in my house that don't understand this disease.

But Joe, no glass or doors. The bare cab is pretty light. Add glass and doors and it probably comes close to doubling the cabs weight. But the ole cherry picker can make it a PITA one person lift.

Yeah, if you don't remove the doors the job becomes more complicated.
I would recommend removing the doors. At a minimum, it will protect the pretty paint on the doors while installing the cab. Other benefits are reduced weight and easier access to the front mounts.

I was trying to remember we had a problem with your rear mounts. Didn’t you have them mounted to the frame first and we ended up mounting them on the cab then to the frame? Also it would have been a little easier if the fuel tank wasn’t already mounted. Only applies to 53-55s.

So I got it all mostly on today! Taking the doors off was definitely an easier way to go. If you have a large garage I can see doing it with the doors on, but I don't have that much space to work.

As you can see, I currently have the truck stored and I work at the storage facility.

So I got in to a bike accident on Tuesday - yes, bicycle, so I'm still a bit sore and I got the front mounts all in and aligned so that was nice. I'm going to have to lift it a bit and twist off the ends on the mounts I'm using because they were just a bit too long but I was too sore to continue. As I drove the motorcycle tonight, I didn't want to push it and be really sore driving home. So later this week or next week I will lift it a few inches, twist off the ends, remove the nuts so it can go in a bit shorter and finish off the cab mounting.

Thanks. I'm hopeful this year is the year she's back on the road again. I wonder if there is a way to find out the last time this truck was last registered and driven (that said, the cab, tailgate, and grille will be the only original parts - one from '54 [cab], one from '53 [grille], and I don't know what year the tailgate is from.

The cab came from Lakeside California and had been sitting atop a bad frame for years. Owner had lost the paperwork so there is no way to know how long it sat or when it was last driven. The last years that it was driven it was in the San Diego/East County area. The tailgate is a brand new Dennis Carpenter item...best aftermarket repop for 53-56 F100s. Hope you heal up soon, those Orange County millennials can be a bit of a challenge on the road.
Here's the license plate that was on it...no date sticker though:

You can try this one. It is for a 48-52 cab install; but it is pretty detailed on how the mount bolts, pads and washers stack up.

Thanks Chuck! After I wrote up that one post, I got to thinking that the tailgate looked too new/good in terms of the welds to be an original! And as no one makes after market grilles that I could find except for the '56, I had to go original on the grille!

Sadly, it was some guy in his 50's that hit me - he was part of a group and he was trying to pass/race someone from the front and didn't even see me until he whipped out and we collided! But the pain is slowly going away!

With any luck, I'll have the cab fully mounted correctly this coming weekend as well as the bed and I can get you back your bed dolly!
