Qs about D-44 spider gears, 4 in front?

78 Bronco, 351M, C6, full time. 3.50 gears, factory stuff, nothing custom, yet...

Plan is to install a 460 some day and I'm concerned about the strength of the front diff. standard open 44 for now. looking at the parts manuals all I found was a 2 spider front diff. are there open diff carriers that have 4 spiders? I found trac-loks that have 4 spiders but don't want a trac-lok up front.

another option would be Detroit Tru track. great for a steering axle and no spiders gears to break.

the truck will never see hard-core off roading, just daily driving and "stupid-stuff". plus whatever I can get into around Ohio & Michigan.

thanks

Hmmm, I'll take the silence as a no. most likely will opt for a True Trac or Torsen.

Well that same basic axle was installed in F250s with 460s in them so as long as you don't do 3500rpm drop into drive shots it should be good.

I don't think they make a 4 spider open diff for the Dana 44 because the spider gears in the open diff rarely ever fail due to too much power, usually you will break a u-joint, driveshaft, or axle shaft long before a spider gear will fail. If you want to upgrade then the Truetrac is a great unit to run in the front axle.
