2001 Expedition intermittent heat

I’ve got an ‘01 Expedition with weird heater issues. Heater core was bad. Replaced heater core, thermostat, blend door actuator. Now, sometimes the heat works, sometimes it doesn’t. When I move the temp selector, I can hear the actuator functioning. Any suggestions?
also, rear heat doesn’t work. But I’m pretty sure rear core is clogged. Just haven’t had time to attempt to flush it.

you have new parts, but have to verify that each is working.
--first, the temp gauge should be in mid range
--next the heater hoses IN and OUT should both be as hot as the radiator upper hose.. too hot to hold onto.
--if hoses are not HOT, then you don't have flow --- pluggage / low coolant / etc
--if the hoses are HOT, then you don't have heat transfer ... normally this is blend door not 100% stroke. The door could be loose / stuck / or the **** on the dash could be slipping on the control shaft.

Would an air bubble cause this?
One hose is hot, the other isn’t. When turning the temperature ****, with the key on but not running, you can hear the blend door operating, opening and closing.
Kinda desperate, it’s freezing here and I’m having to drive this while mine is waiting on parts.

Yes, as would any other fault that causes no or insufficient flow through the core.

Low coolant, air bubble in coolant loop, clogged core, thermostat stuck open, kinked or internally collapsed hose, worn out water pump, closed coolant valve (if equipped) are all possibilities.

Just did a really quick reverse flush through the heater core. Had great heat for about 20 minutes, then it got cool again. Guess I need to do good flush on it.

I like to cut one heater hose and put a TEE in it.. Use a garden hose and flush one way thru the heater core - thru the motor, and radiator... I leave the cap off the surge tank and open the radiator drain to get flow out.... then run the hose the other way thru the motor and back thru the heater and out the cut hose.

The nice thing about the TEE is you can use it as a vent to get air out of the heater core when your refilling the system.

Exactly what I did. With the exception of flushing through the motor. I placed the tee on the outlet side and disconnected the other hose from the intake.

Im getting good flow when reverse flushing. But haven’t flushed the other way because I didn’t have another hose connection. I did blow air throw from the inlet side and had good air movement.
However, again, only had heat for about 20 minutes then it was gone. Not sure what else to try now.

it sounds like you still have gunk floating around in the coolant. Are you pulling the coolant drain plug and the bottom of the block? Maybe you need one of those flush chemicals the help break down the junk and clean the system.

pull the petcock out of the bottom of the radiator during the flush... that is a LOW point.

With the back heat not working due to clogging and the front working for a short period of time after flushing, it sounds like the entire coolant system has junk in it and needs to be flushed. You've got to take hoses off and power flush through everything with a garden hose, both directions where possible.

Thanks for the replies everyone. The Expedition has taken a back burner due to me working on my truck. Can’t afford to have all my vehicles down at the same time. I will get around to flushing the entire system, it may just be a while before I get to it.
Having major issues with my 02 F150. But that will be another post.
