I have a Ford technical service bulletin that recommends disposing of y block sodium filled exhaust valves in a lake. Dennis

Around the midwest when I was young, it was common to take your car to a service station and have the underside sprayed with "road oil" -- used motor oil. My grandfather said cars rode like a dream for a month or so afterward, and it supposedly helped delay the rust worm.

My father always dumped his used oil near my mother's rhubarb garden, claimed he was just returning it to the source. I wonder how much lead I got from mom's rhubarb pies?! I'll tell you what, they thrived on it.

Ross, up until the early 80's it was common around here to dump used motor oil on the camp roads next to the lake. To keep the dust down.
Guess where all the oil went after a rainstorm....
