Dorman steel wheels and parts geek experience

Warning!!! I wanted to put some new wheels on my E350 and called Dorman who told me they make their wheels to ford specs. I got the wheels and weighed them and they are three pounds lighter then the Ford steel wheels. So I went ahead and mounted the new tires on the wheels and all of them had run out either sideways or up and down with new tires. Of course that makes the van shake. I called Partsgeek.com where I bought them from and they told me that they will not cover return shipping, they told me there is no compensation for the mounting and dismounting of the tires. I called Dorman and they told me they would do a labor compensation but it must come through Partsgeek. Partsgeek told me that they will not do such and so I am stuck with some cheap rims that are not going to hold up and I wanted to warn all my fellow van owners that the Dorman aftermarket wheels are too light, made in Columbia (that's not Georgia) and I would encourage you to stick with Accuride rims, even those I have had trouble with over the 100,000,000 miles I have done in Ford vans. Cast alloy wheels have not been completely successful without Centramatic balancers behind them. Just trying to help someone avoid some pain.

Does the runout/wobble come from the tires, or the wheels ? I've had similar problems too in my E150, but it's all the fault of crap tires, not the 40 year old aluminum slot wheels. The tires in my case were Cooper, Mastercraft branded (same mfg, different names) Also had this with BF Goodrich too. Dismount the tires from the wheels and have them spun on a balancer. That will isolate the true cause of the problem. I switched to Toyo and Yokohama's and the problem was cured. The others were all "Hecho en Mexico" probably in the same factory.

The wheels can be out of true, up and down, sideways. 3 of these wheels are going up and down. It can be the tire or the way its mounted. Some wheels the center hole is off so the lugs need to be used for balance. The standards or quality control for production of these wheels sucks. My E150 alloys are almost perfect every time I put new tires on. Both of my E350's have all kinds of issues trying to get the wheels to spin with little out of round. I feel it more with the one ton suspension too which only makes it more irritating. They are both perfect at 90 mph, but its hard to maintain that moment of bliss.

Never buy anything with the Dorman name on it. They are the cheapest aftermarket parts available and they always claim OEM specs and they never are.
