Diagnosing is rarely a guessing game, or doesn't need to be. Follow advice and check, pressure and flow. I always check to make sure the pump isn't sucking air too.

FIXED!!!

It ended up being the distributor that came with the engine. I don't know if anything was wrong with it or if it was to do with it being from a 76 and my truck is a 84? I but my old one on it and it took off.
I also pulled my carb and checked my floats. And I adjusted the accelerator pump. Also put a new gasket on the carb.
Thanks for all the help with it. I'm really liking this site so far. You guys have been a great help.

Good to hear you got it fixed.

I also want to thank you for posting what the fix was as it may help others.

As for the 76 or 84 dist. I would think they would both be the same as it did drop in and motor ran. I can see the weight springs being different, maybe even the vacuum units of the range they work in.

Did you check the star wheel gap between it & the pick up?
Wonder if that could be too large and causing the issue?

I would think they would be the same too. I didn't check anything on the other distributor. I just pulled it and dropped the other one in. Guess something with that one if off. I'll look at it tomorrow and see what I can find out.

And the fuel pressure was setting at 5 psi when I put a gauge on it.

Thanks for helping! I still need to tune the carb a little more to have it completely right.

If all was/is original (?), the 1984 4.9L would have had a computer controlled distributor. The 1976 would not.

I think 84 had both.
When I went to mechanics school, many decades ago, they taught us to always make sure all the ignition system was up to snuff before attacking the carb. Good advice that I myself sometimes forget. Glad to hear you got it sorted out.
