Hello!

Here’s what I’m working on - 1996 EB Bronco, 5.8, E40D.

My radiator had a slow leak, as did my water pump and t-stat housing. I ordered all parts for the job including new cap and upper/lower hoses. I replaced all parts today, went fairly smooth. Only difference is the new radiator is 2x as "thick", and now my fan shroud mounting set-up from stock configuration won’t work. Has anyone else experienced this? I can shoot some pics in the AM when the light is better if that would help. I’m guessing I’ll need to custom fab some kind of bracket for the top of the radiator? Other than than, it fits great and being bigger doesn’t bother me in the least.

Wrong radiator, it’s for the heavy duty coooling system. I haad the exact same problem and had to order the other radiator. If too can order the other fan shroud that will fix it.

 

if you want to keep the heavy duty rad you need the other shroud. also the hose and tube for coolant to the throttle body. i just went through this on my 95 5.8 xlt.

depending how warm it gets where you live determines if you want to keep the hd rad. my bronco had the towing package so i think someone put the thinner one in sometime back.

 

Thanks! This answers my question, and makes sense. Everything lined up/fit so I figured it couldn’t totally be the wrong set up.

 

Is this hose/ line still available somewhere?

I had to replace my OE line when the truck was about 5 or 6 years old (about '98 or '99) and used a Ford replacement piece.

That replacement is closing in on 20 years old now and I'm sure is nearing its service life.

 

Good question, I noticed those are some kind of steel line with compression (almost like a pressure line?) fittings.

 

Some people just replace it with a solid rubber hose and zip tie to the top of radiator.

Others seem to have had good luck cutting the swaged ends off and installing new rubber to the metal tube with hose clamps.

I would prefer the to replace with an original looking piece if it was available and not terribly expensive.

 

can you post links to the radiator and the shroud this could help others going forward.

 

Great idea! I will make up a quick post with some pictures tomorrow, as my parts are locally sourced from a small mom-and-pop type chain. That won’t stop me from cross referencing them with something available online and giving you my tips and lessons learned (oh, so many).

 

Well, project complete and leak free for the time being. I ran out of daylight, so I’ll snap pics tomorrow.

 

Here’s some photos of the finished product. I replaced my radiator with a direct replacement, nothing custom about it. All parts we’re sourced from a local vendor, and fit great. I replaced the thermostat, water pump, radiator, radiator cap, top hose and bottom-bottom hose. The bottom hose on mine is a 3 part design, with a "T" that goes to a cooler between the oil filter and the engine block.

 

For whatever reason, I am having a hard time getting the hard trans. Lines that come into the radiator (brass couplers above) to stop...... seeping? Not. A huge leak, but definitely has red ATF coming out of it. Also, it appears my t-stat housing is leaking ever so slightly. Guess I’ll be digging back in this weekend or whenever I get some time! Any one else had this problem? T-stat was good for several days, just noticed a tiny bit of coolant in the valley behind water pump yesterday.

 

I had similar issue w/ t-stat housing. I ended up backing out bolts and sealing the threads- problem went away.

 

Did you use a PTFE paste?
