Breeze Clamp Torque/RiffRaff Boots

Running Riffraff hot side boots with Breeze (t-bolt) clamps; both from Rifffaff. 10K miles on parts. Stock CCV setup with what appears to be normal oil amounts in the CAC system on disassembly.

Recently blew the boot connected to the turbo off during a tow. Luckily, got back together and got it home.

Cleaned up everything at house, watched several videos on suggested install, and put back together. Torqued to 45 in-lbs using a 1/4" drive wrench that I verified against another wrench at work. I'm probably a wimp, but felt I was going to break something at 45 in-lbs. Just based on clamp bite into boot, I feel these are tighter than I've historically run.

I did verify run-down torque and a new clamp only appears to need around 4 in-lbs to get the nut to run.

I recall the Ford spec is 108 in-lbs but they use a different clamp and a boot that likely concentrates the load over a lesser area than the non-bossed Riffraff boot. Anybody have any rundown torque on those clamps or a "net" torque value applied to the boots?

Anybody running Riffraff boots have torque data/boot holding experience to share? Am I being a weenie at 45 in-lbs with this setup?

About 100 inch pounds is right for that type of clamp. You'll see different companies recommend values around 95-110. You under torqued them.
(You are sure you're doing inch pounds, right? Not foot pounds.)

In the first place throw away the torque wrench idea when it comes to installing boots. I don’t know why the idea of torquing boots keeps getting repeated over and over but it isn’t a scientific process. No offense at all to the OP but there is a reason you don’t see many reputable sites giving a recommended torque. Just crank them down. 45 inch lbs is 3.75 ft lbs or in other words like not clamping them at all. Use a 3/8 drive wrench and just crank them down, probably closer to 15 ft lbs or more. I have run boots from many companies over the years and they all require more clamping force to hold them on than that. Blow a boot? Then it wasn’t tight enough. I have one customer running 58psi single clamped and nothing special about install. So just crank them down and go drive it confidence.

Can’t be a lot of help on the actual torque for the boots. I have run Riffraff boots and clamps on all of my trucks over the last 10 years, 7.3, 6.0, 6.4 and 6.7. Even with my 6.4 that was over 64 psi boost I never used a torque wrench to put them on, I just used my snap on electric impact gun. Never had any issues with them staying put, even towing my 16k toyhauler. I think you should clean it all up with brake cleaner, tighten them better and you are good to go! If all else fails give Clay at Riffraff a call. He has always been quick to help me out over the years when I have questions.

I've got a set sitting on the shelf in the shop. The Riffraff elbow boot for the turbo is about 2/3 the size that it should be. No idea why the damn thing is so small. I've been using a set of Dieselsite boots for about 7 years that have been fine. I just thought I might try the riffraffs.

My EGR is deleted and I vent the crankcase to the open air, so I don't get any oil in there.

That being said, I blew off the turbo boot twice in the last year pulling up a steep grade while towing the bass boat. When that happens, you may as well be pulling with bicycle..

After the second time, I just built a bracket off the Alternator platform. It's solid. She ain't blowin' anymore.

Yup, I use an M12 impact and zip it until they stop tightening. Riff Raff boots and clamps, but also did it on the stockers before. Never broke a clamp.

Thanks for feedback. I tightened boots till I was comfortable by hand, then went back with wrench and was surprised I was only pulling 45 in-lbs, and hence the reason for posting. I went up to 75 and didn't hear anything pop, so that's good, and will probably tack a few more on for good measure. Ultimately, just trying to get a reference torque so I have an objective value to go to (or beyond) if I lose an other boot.
