Compression test 101. The peak number by itself tells you little about your engine. What you need to do is test all cylinders, record the results, then evaluate. Sure, you'd rather see 180PSI instead of 80 PSI, but more important is that all cylinders are sealing alike.
Make sure that when you test the engine is warm and the throttle is open.
First, all cylinders should be within 10% of all others.
If one is low, squirt a little.motor oil into the spark plug hole and retest. If the compression comes up, this is a strong indicator that the rings are worn. If pressure does not come up, you may have a valve sealing issue. A leakdown test may further isolate which valve us the culprit, but to be honest you're probably going to have all valves redone so why bother?
If 2 cylinders in a row are low, suspect a head gasket failure.
