Last look on my 2017 Lariat, they were metal, chromed. I'd better check again. On my 2013. I pulled them off and put on stainless steps, not bars. If these are in fact plastic, which I can't imagine just for durability reasons, they will be switched out. Since new, I smack my boots on them to clean off the salt, sand, snow, etc. I would think by now, they'd be destroyed if plastic.

They sure sound like plastic when you tap on the with a piece of metal. On a positive note, they won't rust out...

Use plain old white vinegar. The build up is calcium that is used in the stuff to treat the roads. Living in Pa I have tried it all and this works the best. Safe on all surfaces to.

I use SOS pad with soap, little elbow grease and weekly attention will keep them looking new!

I actually use Sparkle glass cleaner with about 25% vinegar in it. I found it works great on the chrome running boards. Been using Sparkle mixed like this for years for windshields and mirrors. Gets all but the worst hard water spots off if used regularly.
