72 f250 power steering itself

Hello I've been looking for an answer for this unsuccessfully for a bit now.. I have a 72 f250 that has had a 460 swapped in.. For some reason even with a brand new (reman) pump and box this thing has a mind of its own to the point at idle if you nudge the wheel one way or another it will steer that direction without any input all the way to the lock.. I am a bit stumped on this one because I can't see how it could be any wear parts (king pins tie rods ect) any ideas would be greatly appreciated..

Wow, that's not good. Did it do this with old box and pump. Get worse after one or the other was installed?

My guess is the steering box is issue.

Ghost in the box

The only thing that I can think of is the body mounts. If there is a vertical strain on the coupling the control valve in the box is not unloading.

Can you explain why this is to me, because that body mount is real rotten and I think you’re right! I’ve never been into a steering box to understand them so Id like to know why

Ghost in the box

Try disconnecting the coupling then you will see how much mis-alinment there is.
Try to turn the coupling by hand to see if it still wants to self steer.

Bingo

Sir if I could buy you lunch I’d do it! I did as you said sort of.... I jacked the cab off of the mount shimmed it up and took it for a test drive amd what do you know! Until the shim came out it behaved perfectly!

Body mounts

Man, I hope the rest of your truck does not look like that.
Dennis Carpenter has replacement panels. If the area on the cab floor where the panels are welded is solid you could “patch panel” the lower section together with new mounting hardware, since you can weld.
I just replaced the ones on my truck and cutting the spot welds was a real PITA, I now wish I had just “patched “ them in as they just had some small holes.
I first thought that you were going to hire the Ghost Buster Team.

Thumbs up F250

Looks like a survivor, and well cared for. A little repair on the mounts and should give many more years of service.
Good Luck

Hey Brandon1986, you don't need to replace the cab, just the cab mounts. Don't go cheap either stay away from LMC mounts.

Wow...good thought Kenny! Didn't even think about rusty mounts, and I've had to deal with those before but never with a power steering truck.

Agree, good looking truck and cab mounts are so typically rusted out. Even my '69 which was a really clean southern truck had issues that I addressed 25 yrs ago.

I’d rather not go cheap on the mount, I don’t REALLY want to go LMC they are real proud of their stuff and I heard they aren’t very good from more than 1 place..
I’d be open for suggestions on where to buy quality
I want to replace the cab mostly because there are at least a dozen of these cabs on our homestead in various shades of disrepair.. I want to cherry out one of those while I continue to drive this one
