Eliminate Air Conditioner Pump - 1988 F250 460 GAS - Bypass Or Smaller Belt?

Hi Folks.

I have an old 1988 F250 with the gas 460 V8 motor.

The air conditioner was not hooked up when I got it. And now the bearing is going out on the pump.

I found this Doorman Bypass pulley, to replace the entire pump. But I have read some pretty terrible reviews of these things (plastic pulley, not aligned, etc).
https://www.dormanproducts.com/p-291...20460%25207.5L

Does anyone know off hand if I can just put on a smaller belt instead of using that bypass pulley on my motor?

Thanks

You could try to find an OEM idler pulley at a junkyard. I haven’t seen a thread where a shorter belt was used to bypass the a/c. Most of the questions are about bypassing the air/smog pump.

Thanks for the idea. So, is there an OEM idler that some of these came with instead of the AC pump? Since it already has an idler pulley, would I then have 2, or get rid of the one I have now?

That Dorman part has the bracket that the OEM part would have. It would bolt onto the compressor bracket. Fleet or stripped models wouldn’t have had air conditioning so will have the idler pulley and bracket. That way the factory could use one belt for all models.

OK. Thanks. I think I read on another forum that the same bracket is used on a few different motors. I will try and find one.
