Anyone else have similar problem with an OBD2 adapter?

Last night I sat in the truck for about 10 minutes with the key on engine off, adding displays on Torque Pro app which is installed on my joying head unit. I bought a cheap elm 327 android Bluetooth adapter because the head unit couldn't connect $20 odb2 adapter I had previously.

This morning I turn the key on, waited for the glow plug light to go out and then started the truck. The odometer was showing "-----------". The rpm gauge wasn't reading as well.

I shut the truck off and try again. Same deal. I gotta get to work so I drive away (about 2 miles). The rpm spike up a tad and for a second before shifting. At work I shut the truck off, unplug the Bluetooth adapter and all is back to normal it seems.

Now the head unit wouldn't connect to the adapter before I even started the truck. On torque pro all the ocons were lite except the truck icon. Couldn't get the head unit to even see the adapter for connection.

I type the previous text earlier today.
Just went out for lunch and all seems good for now.

Maybe I should try a better adapter?

I have heard that the "mini" ones have issues sometimes.

Here is the one I purchased and still have, never had any problems with it.

I'd keep that adapter as far away as I could from your OBDII port! It sounds like it is "talking" on its own to your PCM, not a good thing imho...

I have a cheap one too, but the 1st one was flaky, the second one has been perfect...

Thanks for the link Preston. I noticed that one is specifically for android. The joying head unit I have apparently will not connect to just any adapter. The bafx was the first one I've bought but it wouldn't connect. I'll check my purchase history to see if there's a part number difference.

I didn't like how far the bafx hung down and was pretty pleased with the mini until now. I noticed through your link we can get a cable for the port. I think I'll combine the cable and android bafx to give it a lower profile.

I think it's definitely talking to something and I agree, it's not going back in. Hauled some stuff off after work and everything seems ok now. We need a "wipe your sweat emoji".

You are right on about it being bigger. I would have to sometimes make sure my boots wouldn't hit it when I had my 6oh.

Don't forget that you have several networks tha all come to the OBD2 port.
It could be as simple as the adaptor shorting out the network lines and causing
communication issues.

I have the same one. I have been using it for over 3 years now. The only issue I have had is sometimes when restarting the truck within a few minutes for a pit stop the adapter will not connect. I think it is more the radio than the adapter.
