1976 F150 4x4 short bed parking brake
Ok, I know there are a ton of threads on parking brakes. I think I've read about twenty. Everything is getting all muddled and I'm just getting more confused so I'm going to describe my situation:
1976 F150 4x4 (part time) regular cab short bed
I'm trying to replace my parking brake cables. The set up that was on the truck when I got it could obviously have been modified, but I'll start with that.
My setup looks very similar to this one:
Photo credit: user glen_melton. This setup is from a 1978 regular cab short bed. The only difference is that my rear cable lengths match.
I don't see this set up illustrated anywhere on this diagram that NumberDummy uses:
It may just be that this is the wrong diagram, but I don't see an illustration for F150 4x4 (only F100 4x4). Also this diagram lists wheelbase for regular cab short bed as 116", and NumberDummy cites 117" for wheelbase here: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...s-covered.html
mikeo0o0o0 posted this picture, which matches the diagram above but not my setup:
So my first question is: is the alternate configuration that glen_melton and I have legitimate or is it just something that someone rigged up over the years?
So far I have replaced:
My problem is that the front cable doesn't quite reach the bar that connects the two rear cables. Otherwise, the new parts I have are identical to the ones on the truck when I got it.
I'm trying to figure out if I need to try to create the configuration that mikeo0o0o0 posted? I don't think that would work for my truck because the cross members are too close together (see glen_melton's pic above) and because my front cable has a screw terminal, not a ball terminal. The screw terminal on my front cable also has an eyelet for a spring to hook into, which doesn't match with that configuration either.
Thanks in advance.

So far I have replaced:
- front parking brake cable with LMC part number 45-3843 (cable terminals are identical to original but, appears to be several inches shorter)
- left rear parking brake cable with Dorman part number C92847 (part is identical to original)
- right rear parking brake cable with Dorman part number C92846 (part is identical to original)
My problem is that the front cable doesn't quite reach the bar that connects the two rear cables. Otherwise, the new parts I have are identical to the ones on the truck when I got it.

1976 F150 4WD Regular Cab on the 117" wheelbase (short bed).
Mike's truck is a 1973 F100. The cables are different, plus his truck uses cable connectors (2A790 in pic) between the equalizer bar and rear cables, but your 117" wheelbase F150 4WD does not.
1976/79 F150 4WD Regular Cab:
D6TZ-2A635-C .. Right Rear Parking Brake Cable-57 1/8" long / Obsolete
D6TZ-2A635-D .. Left Rear Parking Brake Cable-65 3/4" long / Obsolete
1976/77 F150 4WD:
D6TZ-2853-B .. Front Parking Brake Cable-89 5/16" long - Use with Part Time 4WD / Obsolete
NOS PARTS SOURCE in Olathe KS has 1 = 913-220-5746.
CARPENTER NOS OBSOLETE PARTS in Concord NC has 2 = 800-476-9653.

Looks familiar
Looks very much like my '76f2504x4 almost identical, except you dont have the behemoth of a transfer case in your face ..... I would recommend removing your cables first so you can get a solid measurement, there are several lengths for different configurations, you can get the aftermarket cables thru any auto parts outlet...

I have the same set up as yours in my 78 F150 Custom 4X4 custom short bed.
I used these cables from Rock Auto:
DORMAN C92820
DORMAN C92847
DORMAN C92846
They worked, but it took my son and me about 30 minutes to get enough slack to get the adjusting nut on the assembly. Pulling, pushing, cussing etc...
What I have been trying to find is the long spring. Our parking brake works great, but would like to be able to get a replacement spring just in case.
All diagrams I have seen, are the different set up.

Blind in one eye, cannot see oughtta the other. (sigh)
Notice in the center of the parts catalog pic is says: MAIN VIEW F100/250 4X2 & F100 4X4
This is the only parts catalog pic for an F100 2WD/4WD Regular Cab, there is no specific F150 2WD/4WD pic (even tho the caption says 1973/ F100/150) except for Stupor Cab.
Regular Cabs: F100 4WD's use the same cables as F150 4WD's. These cables however are year specific.
Two pics: Open your peepers and take a look-see at parts list #39B
