P0231 Code

I posted a little while back about my engine just randomly shutting off while driving. I have found that it will shut off and restart after 3 cranks or turns of the key fires right back up only to 5 minutes later die again, it does this whole charade 3 times then the truck is fine... What gives? I've been told the P0231 could be a low circuit code for the fuel pump, low fuel pressure, inertia switch, and a relay fuse (non-servicable). I had a tech look at it and I explained my issue he said it sounds like my fuel pump is on the fritz. I don't want to drop a 3-400$ nut on a possible bad fuel pump, as well a relay/circuit board is not cheap either. I did replace the fuel regulator spring to the blue spring. Scratching my head, why would it shut off 3 times then be fine and shut off at the same interval every-time. Basically for the first 30 minutes of drive time I'm dealing with this fuel issue. Any help or suggestions, thanks

If you suspect it's the HFCM then you can replace just the motor and not the entire HFCM.
Get an Airtex for about a 1/3 of a complete HFCM.
If it was the IFS then I would think you would be resetting it when this happens.........are you having to reset it each time it dies?
If not, then it pretty much rules that part out.
The blue spring, while an excellent mod/update, would have no bearing on you losing power at the pump.

When you are trying to start it, can you hear the pump running? If not, then the next thing would be to find the power wire to the pump and get a test light on it when the key is in the run position. If you don't have a test light then you obviously don't have power to the pump.
That more or less rules out the pump end of things.

I had the same exact problem this summer and it ended up being the non-serviceable relay in the fuse panel and had to replace the fuse panel.I found it by hooking up a bypass switch and a light connected to the fuel pump to let me know there is power to the fuel pump. When it did it again I saw that the light was out and I flipped on my bypass switch and it started right up, immediately I turned the switch off and it died! So I replaced the fuse panel and I haven't had a problem since Sept. when I replaced the panel. I left the toggle switch permanently mounted .

Just a recap of this problem I had, it ended up being the non serviceable fuse panel under the steering wheel. Found one online for 91$ installed myself in about 7 minutes. Easy peezy. A shop had quoted me 900$!!! Of course thats a remanufactured fuse box they wanted to charge 400$ as ford does not make these anymore, or so I was told, and 3 hours shop labor... 3 hours shop labor!!?? Its literally 4 bolts then the main battery harness, so 5 bolts and it pops right back together plug n play.

Glad you resolved it, but there was a lot of discussion pointing you in that direction in this thread from 2017:

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...0231-code.html

Also, it is still available under the posted part number (6C3Z-14A068-AC) for $323 from AutoNation (better than $400, but not by a whole lot!). Amazon has it for $265.

Sounds like you got a good deal for $91.

i got the part number off the box and entered it into eBay, like 50 different places came up, I sent a message seeing if the seller could over night it, he said he could so it was a done deal. it is a used one, I like to live on the edge, it has been flawless.

I am having the same issue but I also checked for power with the pump unplugged and it has power at the plug. When I plug the pump back up it has no power. Any thoughts?

Sounds like you got a good deal for $91.
Thank you for the link. If this is a soldered relay, why not desolder it? Some don't want to take risk, and I understand. Anyone have the picture of the relay location? Just in case someone needs it.

Update: from what I found, it is under the fuse #40, which is a fuel pump fuse.

It is a bit amusing the person said not to use a used one in the linked thread, ended up with a used $91 one. But good to hear he got a good deal.

Never mind. I thought the last thing I said in the Initial message was the question. Thanks for your time.

Powerstrokes are all junk, The best thing I ever did was getting rid of mine. I have been driving BigRigs for over 30 years and have never seen problems in big trucks that these trucks have.

Which fuse panel did you replace, the one under the hood or the one under the dash?
