5R110W "TYPE B" automatic wont shift out of 1st??

My truck is a 2005 F450 6.0 diesel Automatic 2wd.
As I was driving it this morning, I noticed that it wasnt shifting into OD. I tried letting off the the throttle a bit to see if it would shift but all i could get was direct. Weird because I drove it yesterday and it was fine. At the first stop I came to....about 15 minutes of driving.....it would not upshift out of 1st. As I was driving I put the shift lever into 2nd which caused it to shift into second then it shifted into 3rd on its own. But as I drove it for another minute.....I banged in and out of 3rd a few more times. At that point I turned around and limped it home. It is now stuck in first no matter where the shifter is located....Reverse seems to work good.
I probably drove it 7-8 miles without it going into OD. Then it banged in and out of gears for about 1-2 minutes.....about 6-8 times total before it wont shift out of first.
Oil seems pretty clean(clear)
Any ideas? No service lights on the dash.
Thanks

That is IMHO one of Ford's better transmissions -- built like a tank, but it won't always throw a code -- I'd first see if other electrical issues (battery, charging, PCM, grounds) are the cause:

-- clean up terminals and grounds
-- run capacitance test on batteries
etc

It may require further testing of the pump, valve body, solenoids, etc....................................if you have a Ford IDS it can provide a more detailed look at things like tables, live data, "learning" state, etc.

I let the truck sit for 8 hours after getting it home. I wanted to see what it would do when cold so I took it for a test drive. It shifts 100%. I test drove it for about 20 minutes.....longer than my original journey when it acted up. Trans temp was normal and it was shifting good. Into overdrive and all. No issues.
The batteries are new.

So whats going on here?? Any suggestions?
Thanks for the help

Sounds like you need to get the truck scanned by something capable of reading transmission codes. You won't always see a check engine light when a trouble code is set.

Most transmissions codes will not turn on the check engine light.

I havent had this truck very long.....so I dont know the previous service life.
I just wanted to make sure this wasnt a "tattle tale" sign of something major going on. My thoughts were to take the truck and have the trans oil changed and drop the pan to make sure there werent any chunks.
Is there an internal and external filter?

There is an internal and external filter. The internal filter is good for the life of the trans. Some people change it anyway. The external needs to be changed at 30k intervals.

If you are going to keep that truck, youd be money ahead to download forscan and get a 30.00 elm adapter, reads any code this truck has and can run all sorts test inc injectors, free download.

I bought it to run torque pro. Not sure if forscan will work with it or not.
I also downloaded forscan on my laptop......but my USBlink would not connect.

If it ends up that the transmission needs a rebuild I wont be able to afford it. I will have to put a used transmission in for the time being. I'd like to start looking. What do I need to know when looking for a used unit? According to the door sticker its a Type B. Is it specific to a diesel? Do F150s come with a type B? How about years? My truck is an 05. Thank you

Your jumping the gun....and this is not the kind of thing you can just throw parts at.....we could list out some maybe’s and probally’s and they can all be wrong. The tranny is a gear system imbedded in a complex hydraulic switch box using valves, actuators, seloniods , etc. take it to a tranny shop and get an estimate.....weight that against a used junk yard dog that may not be any better that what to have now.

I am running Windows 7 professional on my laptop.

I just had a ford tech over to scan my truck tonite. The only code that came up that he said could be related is P0606. He cleared it.

So now i will change the transmission oil and filter and clean (contact cleaner) the terminals at the PCM. Any other suggestions? Grounds...if so...where?

Thanks
