engine shutdown after “oil can” warning symbol

shutdown on me while driving but started fine 3 hours later. temp is subzero and assumed low oil pressure but tuner doesnt offer a pressure guage. oil is 9000 miles old but good level. surprisingly didnt throw a code. should i be worried or just consider a fluke?

Fuel could have waxed up possibly. How was the engine coolant temp? Plugged oil cooler combined with cold oil would give low oil pressure symptoms maybe? 9k miles on the oil? Who does that on a 6.4 anymore? I thought 5k miles was the absolute max for a stock regen system. No?
I will never know why Navistar thought oil pressure was unimportant.

I agree,.....have no idea why they thought an oil pressure gauge on these trucks wasn't needed

X2. Was always told go with severe maintenance requirements on the 6.4. I am deleted so I am trying to go more with oil analysis.

Any noticeable active oil leaks on the truck?

Seems to me that Sinister has an adapter that goes somewhere where you can get oil pressure readings.

Well considering I had this happen to me today and last Saturday. I will say you gelled up. I've owned my 6.4 for 10 years and never had this happen. But I don't remember it ever being this cold. Temps getting down to -15° for the last few weeks. I drove my truck almost 2 miles before it shut down on me. RPM's would fluctuate and then shut down. The oil can light would come on, but a code scanner showed P0087 low fuel pressure. After a short time the truck would start. This happened today even with an anti-gel additive. It's just to cold.

i'd never run 9K on the oil with this motor. Your oil cooler is in the valley of the motor. You plug that up then you will be for a rude awakening.

5K is all I would run, especially to keep valve train wear down.

Yeah, that's the wax in the fuel solidifying. If you're home, I'd do like the folks in AK do, block heater, and put freeze tape on the fuel lines and tank, or mix a cup of kero with a full tank of fuel and add a fuel lubricant.

my in-laws run heavy equipment, and their fuel is mixed with kero. And they still have had trouble with gelling these last 2 weeks. Hoping these freezing temps break soon.

Just in case climate change is real, and your cold temps could be a regular occurrence, I'd go with something like this as a permanent fix.

Thank you. I did fail to mention that the water separator warning came on a couple days ago but it was too iced up to **** with. I'm having oil and fuel system filters changed tomorrow. I will also move to the 5k oil change schedule and use fuel additive when below freezing.
