Anybody towing with a high mileage truck,
do the 5.4's lose power as the miles get higher.
I've read they do but mine has over 200k and I tow with it, seems fine to me.

 

Mine is a 1999 with 355,000kms (220,000 miles?). I tow my aluminum bass boat (2000 lbs?) through the Rocky Mountains on a regular basis with no issues.

 

All these motors will still be as powerful over the long term providing the cylinder compression is up to spec for all cylinders, all other operating parameters are correct.
There is no reason the power should fall with age if these items are as they are designed to be.
Electronic engine control is way superior to the old carbed engines of yester year.
Matter of fact, the old engine needed a valve job at some point.
These engine hardly ever have valve sealing problems over there life time.
There are exceptions but this is generally the rule overall..

Thanks for the feedback, I haven't had any problems towing 18' tt all over the Rockies,
If it was/is losing power from age I can't tell.
At 212k miles it runs great.
Not sure why people say they run out of power,
Probably cause they don't know what they're talking about..

 

If you experience a loss of power or engine rattle when towing, it could be the MAF sensor (I replaced mine and the issue went away), injectors need cleaning, plugged fuel filter, or a tune up is needed. I have done all of these to mine over the last couple years, and no more issues.

 

My 99 5.4 has about 375k on it. I tow a wide variety of things regularly. If the engine is running good, it pulls very well. Ive got a P0301 that is killing me right now otherwise I would have towed a trailer today.
