OEM Sound Dampening in Doors

The original ford dampening material in the center of the door shell appears to have been applied with a knife/trowel. Some has chipped off but most is still there and isn't easily removed. Access is difficult above the access panel. How did you guys remove it? Or did you leave it and stick new dampener over it? I plan to clean up the inside where reachable and treat with rust converter then apply dampening material.

Just removed enough to put on the new lower door skin. Left the rest but will cover it with whatever I put on the rest of the door. The metal was good under what I had to remove.

John did any scars show on the outside when you scraped yours out?

None at all, most of it was so brittle it just flaked off. Once I got it off I cleaned the metal with lacquer thinner then used 80 grit paper to etch the metal ,wiped it down again with lacquer thinners and used a small roller and brush to coat it with DOM 16 which is the equivalent to POR15 but half the price..then for sound deadening I used Dynomat..

My 56 door sound deadener was in pretty good shape, so I just cleaned it off with solvent and after it dried, applied dynamat. I cut four pieces to fit inside each door so it was easier to install and roller out smooth.

OEM sound dampening in doors

I warmed it with heat gun and it scraped right off with a putty knife. Then wiped it with mineral spirits. Dean
