Plastic filler cap is pitting? Haven't heard of that yet, how long does it take for it to happen? Got a pic?

When I got my truck back in 2007 mine was pitted bad. I replaced it and haven't had a problem since. I had a '97 Taurus did the same thing.

I cannot say for sure my oil fill cap was pitted, but I know the writing on it was warn off, so I replaced it because my OCD took over.

My wife's excursion is pitted and the writings gone, I have just left it, didn't see a concern with it.

Seen it on all of them when they are old. Just replace for $8 off Amazon and you will be good for another 15 years.

It's been mentioned here that putting it upside down on the battery, as many commonly do, will cause this. Like Sous, my OCD got the better of me and I had to replace mine. Pretty cheap on Amazon.

Last one i got was off Amazon lasted about 6 months and its starting to do it. I always put my cap on the rubber strip behind th grill. I was searching around and found some billet ones on ebay for 25 bucks might try one of them. I will post a pic of the one on there now later today.

I bought a new Ford cap (F3AZ-6766-B) off Ebay for $5.90 with free shipping on November 7, 2014. Works and looks great.

Not really sure why it happens, but I've seen it many times. Leave it along long enough and the pitting moves on to looking like the cap was attacked by a small critter.

When i got my truck the cap was pitted, replaced it and about a year later is pitting again. I don't get it. Were these things made from pop rocks?

Ive been an owner of a 7.3 since 2010. Now, i have 2. From trials and tribulations, I've came to an affirmative conclusion that its caused by 1 of 2 things...
A..the end result of the volcano effect..or B
...not changing your hpop oil
