confused about rear axle seal part number

1988 e150 5.0 AOD
I need to buy 2 rear axle shaft seals for my 8.8 ford axle.
RA lists several different seals. I wanted to buy Motorcraft.
The motorcraft seal RA says fits my 88 is $53!
http://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/f...haft+seal,2336

In 1990 the motorcraft part number changes and the price drops to $4
http://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/f...haft+seal,2336

Centric, USA Standard, and Dana list the same part number all the way from 1988 through 1991.
here is the other 2 years
http://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/f...haft+seal,2336

http://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/f...haft+seal,2336

Thanks
Anna

Here is a site that has a good cross reference and they say E3TW-1177-AA fits 1983 to 2002
http://www.yoyopart.com/oem/11653963...3tw1177aa.html

They also show the Motorcraft part number to be Motorcraft BRS-40

That can't be the axle seal, look at the size of that thing! 4"ID x 5.5"OD.

That $53 dollar seal is not for a 8.8". That's way too big. That's closer to the size for a 1-ton full floating diff rear hub seal.

Agreed that Motorcraft seal BRS37 D0TZ1S175E, DOTZ1175E, DOTZ1S175E, must fit something bigger then a 8.8 rear axle shaft!
-
-
The next one from the bottom listed is the DANA 39246 {#EOTZ1177A} Info
Rear; Ford 8.8 Axle
O’reilly shows the measurements on the Dana 39246 part to be
Housing Bore (In): 3.040 Inch,,,,, Inside Diameter (In): 1.710 Inch

3.040 is a little big I think for a 8.8
-
-
The third one up from the bottom, USA STANDARD GEAR USA30030 Outer Axle Seal Info
Rear; RWD; for Set 20 bearing,, That reminds me somewhat of the seals used in my 85 van with a ford 9“ axle.. So I know that one is not for the 8.8..
-
-
That leaves the top two choices..
CENTRIC 41768000 Centric Premium Oil & Grease Seal Rear
USA STANDARD GEAR USA30201 Rear 2.579" O.D.

Haven’t been able to find the Centric measurements but, O’reilly lists 2 different seals..
The DANA 39246 with over 3“ housing bore and the “PowerTorque Wheel Seal”??? with a
2.579" O.D.
-
-
RA doesn’t list another Motorcraft seal till 1990
Motorcraft part fitting being the MOTORCRAFT BRS40 {#E3TW1177AA, E3TZ1S177A} Info Rear Outer; E-150 Econoline Base Model; 1.618 ID X 2.579 OD X 0.475 Thick
BUT the part number prefix E3 indicates a 1983 part... The OD is 2.579

I believe it will end up being the Motorcraft BRS40
Maybe Number dummy can chime in and help out...!

Get National Seals. Most parts houses still carry them.

E3TZ-1S177-A (replaced E3TZ-1177-A) .. 8.8" Rear Axle Seal / E3TZ-1177-A marked with ID number: E3TW-1177-AA or A1A or A2A / Available from Ford

MSRP each: $7.89.

1983 F100 / 1983/89 F250 / 1983/96 E100/150 & F150 (except 1993/95 Lightning) & Bronco / 1997/2001 E150 with 3,800 lbs. capacity rear axle.

I have no parts catalog after 2001.

EOTZ-1177-A is for an E250 w/a Dana rear axle. It's 1 45/64" I.D. x 3 3/64" O.D. x 1/2" thick.

I could not find D0TZ-1175-E but it's not for any 8.8!

Thanks NumberDummy!

So I will need

2- E3TZ-1S177-A Axle Seals

2- E3TZ-1225-AA Axle Bearings

If I find I need to replace one or both of the axle shafts, here is the part numbers I came up with?

1- E7UZ-4234-E / YC2Z-4234-CB Left Rear Axle Shaft

1- E7TZ-4234-A / YC2Z-4234-CA Right Rear Axle Shaft

If the spider gears are worn, here is what I come up with?
1- E7TZ-4211-A Cross Pin W/Bolt

1- E7TZ-4215-A Pinion kit/ 8.8 includes 2 pinion gears with thrust washers

If the other numbers are correct, then what I don’t have is the part numbers for the 2 side gears that the 31 spline axles go into. they may be part # E7TZ-4236-A I am not sure!

There is a kit listed on Ebay that is supposed to have all 4 spider gears and washers but again i dont know if this is the right number

“AL3Z-4215-B Genuine OEM Ford 8.8 31 Spline Heavy Duty Differential Spider Gear Kit. New kit only opened to take photos. This is for a open (non-posi) axle”
.Brand:
FORD\LINCOLN\MERCURY
Country/Region of Manufacture: Germany Manufacturer Part Number: AL3Z-4215-B
Superseded Part Number: 1L2Z-4236-HA

If there's slack in the cross pin, the housing may be worn as well, more likely the carrier is worn as the cross pin is hardened tool steel and the carrier is cast steel. My cross pin didn't look worn either when I pulled it, that's why I chose to replace everything in mine. Summit Racing llsts everything. A Yukon open carrier was $240, the Ford Racing Trac-loc carrier was $20 more. They stock the axles, bearings and seals too.
