Nitrate or nitrite

Just bought coolant test strips from napa to test my nitrate levels and after reading closer it says it tests ph and nitrite levels. I guess i got the wrong strips? Any insight? If so what is nitrite compared to nitrate?

After reading more about it I guess it is the nitrite levels we are after

i went ahead and tested my antifreeze and came up with 1200 ppm nitrite and a ph of about 8.5. So I guess I'm good there but the freeze point was at about 40 to 50 below zero, so I'm thinking it has more than the 50/50 recommended antifreeze to water ratio. Thinking I might drain some and add distilled water. What are you guys thoughts on this? This is a new to me truck about a month ago and am checking and changing fluids and such so I know where I am with them all.

Is this a 6.4L or a 6.7L ?

I know that Ford wants to test the 6.7L motor but i’ve Not seen that on the 6.4L.

Adding distilled water is better than tap water.

My truck is a 2008 6.4. But I can't imagine it hurts to check any of the diesel cooling systems and not knowing very much of the history f this truck as I bought it from a dealer I wanted somewhere to start from

Nitrite is a rust inhibitor = good in antifreeze.
Nitrate is an oxidizer = bad in antifreeze. Potassium nitrate is salt peter in black powder.

So you're testing for nitrite.

I'd leave the ratio alone until the next time you flush, and then I'd use distilled water only.

Ok thanks for the info and yes that was my thought to leave it be. I guess there's no concern about there being too much coolant and the mixture being too thick and causing problems???

Going off memory you want at least 30% water.

I went with Final Charge ELC. Don’t have to worry about the test strips like I did with my 7.3.
