6.4L to 7.3L swap

Just curious if anyone here has made this swap. I have an opportunity to purchase an incredibly clean ‘08 F350 Lariat dually for $11k but the owner, huge repair shop owner, says the 6.4L is running bad and they haven’t torn it down. I have a very good 7.3L & trans avail. and I know it would need new crossmember as well as fabricated motor mounts. Any and all thoughts would be appreciated.

It would be a project.

But:

If you consider your thoughts of fabbing the cross and mounts.........that's the easy part.

You would also have the aspect of the electronic marriage in terms of harnesses, the fab of driveshaft lengths, the relative cost of the 7.3 and trans, as well as the 11k for the victim.

Is it doable, anything is, is it going to cost alot, absolutely!

The joy of trying to eliminate every warning lamp on the dash would also be a handful.

The availability of parts for the 7.3 in the future is also a consideration. I believe that in the near future, they will be becoming obsolete for alot of components and will near extinction as time goes by.

I have a 99 and 08 super diesel, and it would be a dream come true to have a 2018 7.3 fresh off the showroom floor. But that's not in the cards so like everyone else with a 6.4. All you can do is diligence on maintenance and squeeze your cheeks as tight as you can everytime you roll the key.

If you decide to roll the dice on the conversion, please keep us posted on the results and if you decide to opt out, what prompted you to do so.

It's been kicked around in here before, but I haven't heard of one success story or follow up.

Good luck amigo!!

Denny (you did say any or all thoughts!!! )

From a legal perspective, the truck would still be required to meet 2008 emissions.

If Cummins motors are installed, a 7.3 can be done.

Man, that IDI thread was incredible. It looks like a well built turbo IDI would be a better solution unless you are pretty good with electrical troubleshooting. Personally, 11k would be too much to pay for a truck with known Problems. If you commit to it, please document your journey. I am sure others would benefit from seeing how you make it work.

Just kicking the thought around as a f450 king ranch came up that I could afford until then first check engine light. The IDI was a pretty good read though! I think a DI could be done pretty good too. I just dont think it would compare to a good running 6.4 but I have no real experience with 6.4s

Did u put ur motor in the 08 frame or put the cab on ur 99? I was originally thinking about just putting my 01 harness in but the 08 is a 4 door lariat with some bells an whistles I’d like to keep but not exactly sure how I’d get it all to work.

That looks real good. Looks like the IDM is already mounted at 7.3 location. Where did you mount the ECM? We would love to get more info on your swap!
