Towing: Tundra 5.7 vs Ford F-150 (need help)
I currently own a Tundra Limited CrewMax 5.7 and I am looking at purchasing a new vehicle.
i have been reading some impressive numbers on the towing capacity of the new Ford and would like to know what you all think.
will the new Ford with either 3.5 Tt or the 5.0 pull as well as my Tundra or better. I just left the Ford dealership and he said the F-150 would tow 13,000 lbs , I just don’t buy it.
Most of the time this new truck will be my daily driver with no real load on it, but I do occasionally tow a 3300 trailer with a 6,000 lbs load.
I have concerns that the Ford won’t do the job.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, plan on purchasing something very soon
Thanks
J

Welcome to FTE!
Just curious, what is driving getting rid of the Tundra? If it still has good bones, drives well, and tows well, might consider keeping the truck you know. Especially if it is paid-off.
Am not clear on the weight that the Tundra is pulling, is it 9,300 (combined), or 6K? If it is the higher number, a lot of folks move into the 3/4 ton or 1 ton platform. The F150 does seem capable at this level, but am seeing where it requires homework and fine-tuning of the hitch to get the rig to work well.
If the trailer weight is 6K, the new F150 probably has the advantage over your existing Tundra as last I checked the Tundras get ~14 mpg empty whether driven hard or easy. The new F150 is showing better fuel economy than that.

The F150 with the 3.5 ecoboost will tow circles around your Tundra. Not trying to be biased but the 3.5 with the turbo's will tow without effort. You won't have to run up the RPMS to keep it in the power band. If you are in the market, find one with the tow mirrors and the trailer brake controller. I have towed with the 3.5 about 15K lbs. It will do the job nicely if you are only towing 6-10K

I'm also looking at possibly buying a new 2018 F150 Screw 3x3 3.5L Eco XLT FX4 in the next few weeks and am also looking at getting a boat to tow behind the truck. I've been trying to research and been finding some conflicting stories and reports about towing with the new F150 3.5EB. So the boat that I'm looking at is a 25' Bayliner and weights 6k, I believe that is for the boat itself, then add the weight of a trailer, gear, fuel, etc I guess and I'm thinking that it will probably be up around 8k , possibly closer to 9k max. So I know that it says the new F150 will tow up to 13k and I won't be towing it long distance very often as I live about 10 miles from the water but might want to take it to farther away locations once in awhile too. So any thoughts or inputs on how well the new F150EB will do towing this boat I want to get to go along with my new truck would be greatly appreciated. Thanks to everyone here who can help me out with their info and similar towing experiences with the new(er) F150 EB's

There is a post in another of the towing forums here that compares an F150 with a 3.5 EB and a '17 F250 with the 6.2 gas motor. Towing a 7K trailer up a considerable grade.

I have lots of friends that tow all kinds of car haulers, from open trailers to 24' enclosed trailers (like mine) with F150s and 5.7 Tundras. There are those that love their Tundras but the F150 EB seems to be the hands down favorite for high capacity, half-ton truck towing.
The EB 3.5 is an awesome motor and with the Max Tow package the F150 will tow an astonishing load. I considered a '17 F150 EB 3.5 as an alternate to my '17 F250 6.7 Diesel. I tow a 9K 24' enclosed car hauler. The F150 did it remarkably well but the F250 with the 6.7 Diesel was a revelation. So that's what I got.
If I were daily driving the truck 100% of the time then I would have probably stuck with the 150 and been completely happy.
