EBPS/EBPV tube Removal and cleaning

Hey guys and gals, I have quite a bit of free time tomorrow, so I'm going to be pulling the EBPS and the tube and seeing if it's plugged up with soot. Some symptoms I've noticed on my truck lately: idle isn't as solid as it once was, feels like I have less power once the truck is fully warmed up, and a loud hissing from exhaust until the truck is warmed up, (I'm guessing this is the EBPV sticking open until the truck gets to a certain temp?) Anyways, I searched it a bit and found guzzle's write up of it and it looks fairly simple. Anything else I should look for other than soot clogged up in the tube? Thanks for any advice

Well the tube will likely be clogged, so follow Bob's write up and clean it. The sensor will also be clogged, but be careful cleaning that out as I believe there's a rubber membrane in there that you can puncture if you poke in there too far. Also, don't forget to clean out the fitting on the exhaust manifold as it will be plugged up too.

Not a bad idea to mark which side is up, as it's easy to forget during cleaning and then you get to waste time figuring out which way that funny shaped tube goes back in there.

If it's the first time taking it off, don't forget the back up wrench on the tube nut when removing the sensor.

But loud hissing from the exhaust is probably the EBPV closing and creating back pressure to aid in warming the engine up. Which is what it was designed to do. Kind of gives off that jet engine sound in the morning when it's cold.

Ah, my mistake. I remember reading a little bit about the EBPV a while back, and got the opening and closing of it confused lol. Thanks for the tips

I snagged this screenshot somewhere...shows the fitting needed if it is bad, threads messed up, etc. Just in case

Well the results were pretty bad as far as the tube goes. As you can see, it's cracked pretty good. The good news is hopefully the new tube will fix my mpg and power loss issue, or at least help it. I'm also gonna go ahead and order a new sensor as I don't wanna take any chances on the old sensor being bad.

Just a note, I believe that there is an updated tube that is bent slightly different than the original and is easier to install.

I think you're right. My truck is an early 99, and on dieselorings.com, it said the e99 tube is discontinued, and the 99-03 tube will fit the e99 even though it's a bit different.

I removed and cleaned the tube on my truck. It was completely clogged throughout about 1/2 of the pipe. It took a lot of brake cleaner and a throttle cable to get it good.

The sensor I ended up replacing with an OEM from RiffRaff. I tried to clean it, but the readings were still not where they should have been. A new was a good improvement over the old.

Good to hear sous. I ordered a tube and sensor from RiffRaff this afternoon and hope to see the parts soon.

Removal of the tube and sensor was even easier than I was expecting. I did have a helper hold the 9/16 wrench on the bracket while I loosened the sensor with the 1" socket. I was also able to squeeze a full size 5/8th wrench on the tube nut itself and loosen it. Most recommend a short wrench, but if you don't have one (like me) you can work around the fan enough and get it loose.

Your tube is actually better than mine was when I replaced it I didn't notice any difference in performance when I replaced it and I look forward to hearing how yours goes.

Our Truck seemed more responsive from a stop after cleaning line & replacing sensor.

Well I got the new tube and sensor installed today. Idle is solid and no longer erratic, maybe gained a little bit of power, but not a ton, the shifting is also quite a bit better compared to before, and the truck also seems to be a hair quieter all throughout the rpm range.

I replaced my tube and sensor about 3 months ago. I had similar results in that there was no significant change in performance, but the shifting was noticeably smoother. I was getting a hard shift from 1st to 2nd under medium-hard acceleration, but after changing the tube & sensor it is now smooth.

My cold starts also seem to be generally better than they were previously (although still not perfect - romped after a few days of sitting with lows down to about 20-25 deg.).
