Misfire cyl 5, fixed/not fixed
#46
No anti seize because I forgot to buy it.
Mark k, the problem I have with your position is that the engine has run perfectly fine for hundreds of thousand miles of miles with the exhaust leak. Granted, only recently has the studs actually popped off, but they were severely loose and some were broken already. The exhaust sound hasn’t changed at all. Not even a bit. And no black soot buildup either.
And if it was running rich then wouldn’t that make a code? I know there’s a code for running lean bank 1 or 2. Is there a code for rich? And if your position is correct then wouldn’t the code pop up?
This thing ran very well until number 6 misfire. That’s when I changed all ten of the (320,000 mile) plugs. Then suddenly I’m chasing a misfire number 5.
Wheres the correlation between the timeline and the o2/rich condition?

Runs as bad as before. No change.
I don’t understand how it can run this rough without setting a code in a short time. I drove this misfiring crap 25minutes. No CEL yet.
Autozone has the following coils in stock:
denso
motorcraft
valucraft
whats the deal; the cheap ones don’t last long? Or do they suck overall somehow immediately?

Well being as those are OE coils I'd say they are done. Everytime I've seen a cracked coil it was "bad". Like I've said, 3 times in this thread already, REPLACE ALL THE COILS AND PLUGS AND REPORT BACK!!!!!!!!!!! Sometimes you gotta bite the bullet and replace parts without "truly" knowing that they are bad whether you think you know better or not. I would almost go so far as to say I guarantee that if you replace the coils it will fix your problem!

I’m starting to lean your way on this. However it seemed like something different a few posts ago. Remember when I swapped the coils 5 and 4 but my misfire code reappeared the same? That lead me away from coils. That crack was from me trying to remove it- not knowing there was a bolt holding it in (it was literally the very first one I began with). And since the crack is way off to the side I figure it wasn’t vital to operation. Replacing all 10 coils as a guess is expensive. I’m trying to do this “right”. Although with lots of ranting and complaining on FTE. I’m waiting for the CEL to come on so I can see if the misfire goes with that coil. I should know tomorrow. My local Ford dealer promised me a deal at $60 for one coil (with boot and spring). And I have a Autozone gift card for $15 that i was thinking of using to buy a “cheap” one. Tell me if I’m crazy here- Cheap one is about $30 actual money (after my gift card) and run it til my next problems. Cheap one has a one year warranty, and it’s pretty easy to replace.

[QUOTE=ceetwarrior;17654311I ordered all 8 red coils for $30 shipped. They look identical to the MSD ones I put in my van for $175. I swear they are probably the exact same manufacture. Now I know, everyone's thinking for $30 for all 10 shipped there's gotta be something wrong. But I'm willing to try. The parts store ones are $50 each and they don't last but 2 years and have a 400% markup. I also got OEM Motorcraft platinum plugs for $40 shipped.[/QUOTE]
I just remembered your post here. What’s the details on your red coils?maybe I’ll do that. And how did it turn out for you?

You probably won't get a CEL until the coil completely fails. They are infamous for misfiring and not throwing a CEL. I used to buy the $50 parts store coils and they only lasted 2-3 years anyway so they eBay ones sure look good to me. I will do them next week on my boss' V10 van and report back.
Ive never seen a OEM coil last more than 10 years, and how old is your van now, yup?

Our 2002 Excur and 2003 Exped has all the OEM coils, except for one that broke at the base of the connector from pulling and the other when #3 plug out.
Denso coils 673-6000 ($25/ea) and boots 671-0001 ($30/set of 10) at Rock Auto work well.
Once the wiring circuit/connectors for the misfiring cylinder is tested and known good parts are in place the last thing on the list is the PCM.
