Resto on a 51 F3 - A Newbie in need

Hi folks,
Just got a 1951 F3 dropped in my lap. Has been sitting in some weeds and trees since 1997. There was 8 inches of leaves in on the floormats. I stepped thru the wood bed so i know that is rotten.
I will be replacing the drivetrain with something in a v8 smallblock with an auto transmission.
The reason for the post is, What is the difference between an F1 and an F3? Is it just the suspension?
Can F1 parts like body panels and add ons for an F1 be used? I have only seen parts for an F1 and wonder how much is out there for an F3
I will be doing a frame off restoration and have all the time in the world to complete it.
I could use some advise on a plan of attack on this wonderful vehicle.
Thanks for any help you can give me on this.

Mike

The F-3 has a heavier suspension for starters. The F-1 is rated for 4700 lbs and the F-3 is around 6800 lbs. You can only swap the cabs, hood and interior parts. Fenders (frt and rear ) are different, running boards, beds are longer. The tailgate is taller and wider. Wheels are bigger ( 16" vs 17" ) 5 bolt against 8 bolt.
Egine, trannies and bumpers can be swapped. Front axle and spindles are the same. Rear axle is different. There are other differences and similarities that I'm sure others will fill in.

As Barry said the fenders are different in the wheel opening. They are however change able with F-1's.

Hey f3 restorer. i too am doing the same. Haven't given up on the original engine yet but may in the future. i replcaed the bed with aged oak from ture value, only 10$ per board. My front wheel cylinders were 1 piston compared to f1 2 piston. What king of engine if any did it have. I might could use some parts if you have a six flathead. any pictures? RH

It does have the flathead 6 in it. and the original 3 speed tranny.
Engine is complete minus the air breather. Was running great when it was parked in 1997. Not sure what has crawled into the carb since then. :-)

Will you part it out or sell complete? Shipping all woul be costly but I could use carb for sure. Email me hayhurst@***.net Do you have the 17" split rims? I bought some new high $16 tires and common 8 bolt rims but stayed with the original. Bought 2 new tires, could use more in the future. My flathead turns over, but have gotten it to fire yet. One problem is a leaky carb base, crack or out of tolerance fitting or something. You say it was running great in 97', thats great, mine unsure of. bought from farmer and had 74 licensce plates on it. It turns over so it has hope. Thanks

I am going to get a 51 F3 soon. And the trans is needing a bushing the guy says he has. I was wondering what transmissions will bolt up to a flat 6 in an f3?
