Another Jag IFS question

Ok, so after a couple of years I think I have landed on a good Jag IFS deal. It is out of a 1985 XJS. From what I have read it is a good selection. SO, before I go pick it up is it a good selection for a 49 F1? Rotor to rotor already removed $300. Oh, and only 30 miles from me..

Jag IFS

Cost is up to you. I have seen them anywhere from $100 to $300. I got an entire vehicle for $400. After taking the IFS and IRS and some miscellaneous items, i had to dispose of the vehicle.

Just make sure you get the steering shaft Z joint along with the IFS. I was also able to use the Jag power steering pump. Worked well for me.

Hope this helps
Dan

If I buy them loose I try to get them for $250 or less if the steering rack looks dry, if the rack is leaking they are expensive to get rebuilt and the price goes down. I prefer to buy whole cars for $500 or less and it ends up cheaper.
You will only need that Z joint if you are soft mounting the IFS, if it is welded you can go with a regular 3/4" U joint with 48 splines on the rack end.

I have them in both of my F1s and this is the setup in my 41 cadillac.

I’m doing this now. Used one out of a 94 but looks the same. I welded mine in and cut the oem front mounts off. I also lowered the rack 1 inch to clear our oil pan. I’m still working on it.. need to complete some of the “boxing” of the frame.. I did some other mods so truck will sit on the ground.

Thanks Dan. Yeah, I didn't figure 300 was too bad for not having to remove it and it is close to me. I have been looking off and on to get a whole care but nothing had came up till now. Still quite a savings over buying a Mustang II aftermarket IFS.

Looks like you cleaned yours up nicely.

Thanks for the info drptop. I will take a close look at the steering rack. Good info on what to look for.

Looking great Bjorn. I assume all those new bolts are Grade 5 or 8 and metric?

I did pick mine up today. Got it for $250 US. The sway bar was gone and the guy didn't tell me that. Was a good day. Dropped the frame at the sandblasters and swung by and picked up the IFS in one trip. lol

That front end is beautiful! Long the plating on the suspension items. Is there a thread where you show your Install?

I assume most are rebuilding these before installing them.. Where are you getting the full rebuild kits for a decent price?

Jag IFS

I bought most of my Jag IFS parts (ball joints, control arm bushings etc.) from Rock Auto (on line). Also bought my rebuilt rack and pinion from Rock Auto. Bought sway bar, rack bushings, and shock bushings (polyurethane) on ebay. Disc brake rotors (drilled and slotted zinc plated) from Cquence brakes, and remain calipers from O'reilly's Auto Parts.

Don't know if there are any master rebuild kits. R&Pinion was around $300.

Way cheaper than a Mustang II type IFS kit.
